The National Monument (MONAS) is a symbol of Indonesia’s struggle and independence located in the heart of Jakarta. Built since 1961 under the directive of President Soekarno, MONAS stands 132 meters tall with a flame-shaped gold-plated top symbolizing the undying spirit of the nation’s struggle. This monument serves to commemorate the heroes’ sacrifices and strengthen national pride.

Architecture and Uniqueness of MONAS.

MONAS was designed by architects Frederich Silaban and R.M. Soedarsono with a simple yet majestic design. The slender towering structure and the golden flame at the top are its main attractions. Visitors can also climb to the observation deck to enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Jakarta from approximately 115 meters high.

History Museum Inside MONAS : At the base of MONAS, there is the National History Museum which houses valuable collections about Indonesia’s journey. The museum consists of several exhibition rooms containing: Historical Dioramas: Depicting the nation’s struggle from pre-independence era, Dutch and Japanese colonial periods, the 1945 proclamation of independence, to modern Indonesia’s development.

Historical Artifacts: Such as traditional weapons, old communication tools, traditional clothing, and important documents illustrating community life and heroism. Photographs and Paintings: Featuring national figures, significant events, and Indonesia’s rich culture.

Educational Information: Explaining national values and the spirit of unity as the foundation of the Indonesian state. The museum is designed so visitors of all ages can learn history in an engaging and easy-to-understand way.

MONAS’ Role in National Life. Besides being a tourist attraction and educational site, MONAS is also a center for state ceremonies, especially the Independence Day celebration every August 17. It is often used for cultural events, festivals, and sports activities involving Jakarta residents and tourists.

Surrounding Environment and Facilities. The area around MONAS is vast and green with well-maintained gardens, an artificial lake, and sports facilities. It is a favorite place for Jakarta residents to exercise, relax, and gather with family. MONAS is not only a historical monument but also a hub for social and cultural activities.
