My husband and I live in the suburbs of a town that has a few things but not really a lot going on. About 5 years ago we started taking trips to a major city about 6 hours away and fell in love with it. We decided we wanted to move there someday but it was in Canada. We both decided we were getting to mid life not death and wanted to hang out and live our lives. We are not the type of sit in a big house and wait for our future grand kids to come visit to give meaning to our lives.
We continued over the 5 years to take trip after trip. Having a great time in the theater, sporting events, shops, restaurants, and vast cultural difference you see in big cities. We tried to figure out how we would move there. We decided we would have a 5 year plan since our youngest child would start high school then and be changing schools anyway we thought that would be reasonable.
5 years later we realized we were no closer to our goal. We realized that the expense of moving to this city was not attainable for a lower middle class family. So my husband looked around the United States our country. He thought about what we really wanted. We want culture, we want walkability. I mean who wants to deal with traffic after a game, concert, or event. Who wants to watch their drinks so they're able to drive or not allow the other person you're with to drink.
My husband found the city of Minneapolis. It's a major city with an actually smaller population density than most cities. Yes it's cold, but we went during a winter storm and these people know how to clear roads and areas like no other city I've ever seen. We went and found it less crowded than other major cities but full of sports, theaters, restaurants, and lots of things to do.
Expense wise Condos weren't too bad to live right down town. Even thinking of Saint Paul we didn't find condos as over priced. On a side note we did have a racial issue in Saint Paul. My husband is black and was told in the hotel that his people were not allowed to sit in the lobby at night by security. They told him he came in off the street instead of upstairs from our room (he has insomnia and went downstairs to the lobby to play on his phone and watch TV so he didn't disturb me). He had to prove he was a guest and told to go back to his room. At this point Saint Paul is no longer an option due to a hotel by the river with the beginnings of Inter in their name.
We made a decision that we needed to move. I am a teacher and with the teacher shortage can get work anywhere. He is a delivery driver and with the way things are can get transferred immediately to a local company in Minnespolis. The decision is made, things should be easy right. Oof how wrong and naïve this statement I made is but that's what I thought a couple months ago when we decided to move.
