My Experience at Adhitya Ayurveda

A Yoga and Healing Retreat in Anuradhapura

I recently spent a few days at Adhitya Ayurveda in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, for a yoga and Ayurvedic retreat. I had read about Ayurveda before, but this was the first time I tried it in a complete setting where treatments, food, and lifestyle all worked together. Furthermore, I went in expecting relaxation, but I left with much more, a better understanding of how simple daily practices can improve health and peace of mind.

The Location

Adhitya Ayurveda is located in Anuradhapura, a city known for its cultural heritage and history. Even though the retreat is not far from the busy parts of the city, once you step inside, it feels calm and quiet. The property is surrounded by greenery, and the layout is simple and welcoming. It is not a large commercial spa, but rather a place designed for personal healing.

First Impressions

On arrival, I was welcomed by the staff with herbal tea. The atmosphere was not overly luxurious, but it was warm and comfortable. I met Dr. Sarath Guanawardhana, the lead physician, who asked me about my lifestyle, eating habits, sleep patterns, and stress levels. It felt more like a friendly conversation than a medical check-up. Based on this consultation, he recommended a mix of treatments and daily yoga sessions for my stay.

The Treatments

My programme included oil massages, steam baths, and herbal drinks prepared according to my needs. Each treatment was explained before it started, so I knew exactly what to expect. The oil massage was very different from a spa massage it was slower, more focused, and aimed at balancing the body rather than just relaxing muscles. The steam bath, with herbs added to the water, felt refreshing and cleared my breathing.

I was also given herbal medicines and teas to support digestion and reduce stress. Everything was natural, and while some drinks were a bit strong in taste, I could feel the difference in how light my body felt after just a few days.

Yoga and Daily Routine

Every morning started with a yoga session. The classes were simple, focusing on breathing, stretching, and holding postures rather than advanced movements. What I appreciated most was that the instructor adapted the session to the level of each person. Since I am not very flexible, I was worried at first, but I never felt out of place.

After yoga, we had traditional Ayurvedic meals. The food was vegetarian, light, and freshly prepared. It wasn’t spicy or oily like some Sri Lankan food can be. Instead, it was simple, nutritious, and matched the treatments I was undergoing. Eating slowly and mindfully was part of the experience, and it made me realise how rushed I am usually with meals at home.

The Environment

One of the best parts of the retreat was the environment itself. In the evenings, I spent time in the garden, listening to birds and just being still. There was no push to fill every hour with activities. The focus was on slowing down. The staff were friendly but never intrusive, giving space when needed and checking in with care.

What I Learned

Spending time at Adhitya Ayurveda taught me that health is not only about treating illness but also about preventing it by keeping balance in daily life. I realised how important sleep, mindful eating, and simple routines are. The treatments helped me feel lighter, but it was the overall rhythm waking early, practising yoga, eating clean food, and resting properly that made the biggest impact.

Final Thoughts

Adhitya Ayurveda is not a luxury spa resort. It is a healing retreat focused on traditional Ayurveda and yoga. If you are looking for flashy facilities, it may not be for you. But if you want to experience authentic care, personalised treatments, and a chance to reset your body and mind, this is an excellent place.

I left Anuradhapura with a clearer mind, more energy, and a few healthy habits that I now try to keep at home. The retreat gave me a reminder that slowing down is not a waste of time, it is part of taking care of yourself.
