Mobile, AL: One of America's Most Romantic Getaways

Time to strap on your kissing boots

Probably the largest pre-requisite for a city to be considered a romantic getaway are the sunsets. If an area lacks a gorgeous dusk, what's the point of packing up the bags (and your partner) to head out there? This guru of romance certainly can't think of one. The third largest city in Alabama, Mobile, sitting on its south eastern border, has just as beautiful sunsets as anywhere, due to it residing in the Mobile Bay, a spectacular body of water which connects to the Gulf of Mexico. Not only does Mobile have gorgeous sunsets, but whether you travel to Orange Beach, Dauphin Island or Florida's Pensacola Beach, you have some of the most dazzling, white sand beaches in existence. So not only is Mobile terrifically romantic, but it is completely surrounded by romance as well! How many places can say that?

So what else makes Mobile so amorous? The older architecture of the city was majorly constructed in its boom period back in early 20th century, so Art Deco designs flood ones senses throughout its various districts. There's something inherently romantic in nostalgia; perhaps acknowledging time's past makes up realize our own time on this Earth is limited, and therefore special. Facing our inevitable demise makes us squeeze a little tighter and kiss a little more passionately, so the shades of the past brought on by the local architecture will undoubtedly increase your appreciation of one another. Or face an existential crisis and go on a huge bender, depending.

Everyone's gotta eat, and a good meal can make or break a mood, which is why the plethora of delicious (and classy!) restaurants throughout Mobile clinch the city as a premier romantic destination in the south. From traditional fine dining in spectacular Art Deco buildings which will make you feel as if you've traveled back in time to a place which serves absolutely perfect bacon wrapped corn dogs and burgers with waffles or donuts as buns (Loda BierGarten), Mobile also features some of the finest prepared seafood in the nation. Food is an important part of life in Mobile, and restaurants which don't bring their A-game hardly survive there, so whatever you are craving, from Indian cuisine to traditional soul food, Mobile has you covered.

Let's be honest here; I could go on and on about the various awesome museums and historical sites in Mobile, but that's not romantic. Sure, Mobile is an amazing town to visit for a wide variety of reasons, and makes a great stop for history buffs, families and anyone who just love exploring America. If you're here in Mobile for any of those reasons, there is plenty to do, but if you're here for romance, it's the nightlife and quality hotels offered downtown which rightly have your interest. In short: both are excellent.

My personal favorite hotel in Mobile is The Admiral, an Art Deco masterpiece and part of Hilton's Curio Collection. However, it is far from the only suitable place for a romantic vacation that you'll never forget. The Battle House Renaissance and the Renaissance Riverview in particular are two buildings which you will never forget, while Bed & Breakfast's like The Condé Inn, with its Colonial Revival architecture, will make you feel as if you're in a storybook.

From romantic evenings on the water to fancy hotel rooms over looking the city, romance will be everywhere most everywhere you see in Mobile. Sure, just like any other city, you'll run into the occasional drugged up hobo or youthful ruffian, but unlike San Francisco and its poop covered sidewalks, this bad element isn't prevalent or plentiful. Indeed, Mobile is a city with pride, with history, and with all the romance (and seafood) you can handle. Book a trip today, and create a smile on the face of your loved one you'll remember even when you're in a nursing home and your brain has turned to soup from dementia.
