Kodachadri Trek: A Mystical Adventure into the Heart of the Western Ghats
Kodachadri is more than a trail—it’s a story, waiting for your footsteps to write the next chapter.

If you're looking for a weekend trek that offers misty mountain views, lush rainforests, ancient temples, and an unforgettable adventure—Kodachadri Trek is exactly what you need. Nestled in the Shimoga district of Karnataka, this offbeat trail weaves through the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary and leads to a summit that feels like it belongs in a dream.
I took the plunge into the wilds of Kodachadri on a cool November weekend—and what I discovered was more than just scenic views. It was a spiritual, challenging, and soul-refreshing journey that every nature lover and trekker should experience at least once.
Why Trek to Kodachadri?
The Kodachadri Trek is not just about reaching a peak—it’s about immersing yourself in nature’s rhythm. With its diverse terrain, the trail starts off with thick forests, passes by waterfalls, cuts through grasslands, and ends with a rocky ascent that opens up into sweeping valley views.
Standing at 1,343 meters, Kodachadri is the 10th highest peak in Karnataka. But what truly sets it apart is its spiritual energy. At the summit lies the Sarvajna Peetha, a small stone temple where Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have meditated centuries ago. The wind howls, the clouds swirl, and the atmosphere feels almost sacred.
Getting There: How to Reach Kodachadri
Kodachadri is around 400 km from Bangalore, making it a great option for a weekend getaway.
By Road: The drive from Bangalore takes about 9–10 hours. You can drive via Shivamogga or Udupi. The roads are scenic and well-maintained.
By Train: Nearest railway stations are Kollur and Shimoga, from where you can hire a local taxi or jeep to the base village Nittur.
By Bus: KSRTC buses run regularly from Bangalore to Kollur and Kundapura.
Most people begin their trek from Nittur, a quaint village surrounded by rice paddies and hills, which serves as the starting point for the trail.
The Trekking Experience: Nature, Waterfalls, and Peaks
The total Kodachadri trek distance is approximately 12 to 14 km one way, depending on the route you choose.
There are two popular routes:
Hidlumane Falls Route (Scenic and Challenging)
This route is a true adventure—it takes you through forests, slippery rocks, and to the stunning Hidlumane Falls, where icy water gushes down a series of boulders. A perfect place to cool off mid-trek.
Jeep Trail Route (Easier and Quicker)
Many trekkers opt to climb up through the falls route and descend via the jeep trail. You can also book a 4x4 jeep ride from the forest checkpoint to the summit, but trekking is the real charm here.
Once you pass the falls, the trail gets steeper, leading through shola forests and open meadows. The final ascent is rocky, with panoramic views unfolding with every step. When I reached the top, clouds swirled around us, and the silence felt divine.
Best Time to Visit Kodachadri
The best season to trek Kodachadri is from October to February. Post-monsoon months bring lush greenery, clear views, and pleasant weather—perfect for hiking.
Monsoon (June to September): Lush and beautiful, but the trail becomes very slippery and filled with leeches.
Summer (March to May): Hot and dry—only recommended if you can tolerate the heat and sun.
I trekked in November, and the cool breeze, misty valleys, and vibrant green surroundings made it ideal.
Accommodation and Food: Simple Comforts, Big Flavors
You’ll find several homestays in Nittur and Kattinahole, offering clean, basic accommodation and wholesome food. Most homestays provide:
Dormitories or twin-sharing rooms
Hot meals (rice, sambar, chutneys, vegetables, etc.)
Packed lunch for the trek
Jeep drop or pickup (on request)
The food is simple, local, and tastes incredible after a long hike. Sharing meals with fellow trekkers over a campfire makes the experience even more memorable.
Tips, Safety & Local Wisdom
Hire a local guide, especially if taking the Hidlumane route. The forest trails can be confusing.
Good trekking shoes are a must—the trail can be slippery.
Carry essentials like a raincoat, water bottle, torch, energy bars, and a small first-aid kit.
Mobile network is patchy, especially as you go higher.
Respect the environment—do not litter and keep noise to a minimum.
If you’re going solo or with friends, expect to spend around ₹2500–₹4000, including stay, food, guide, and transport (from base village). Trekking groups from Bangalore offer weekend packages in the ₹3500–₹6000 range.
Final Thoughts: Why Kodachadri Left Me Changed
Kodachadri isn’t just a trek—it’s an emotional journey. There’s a sense of peace in its forests, a quiet thrill in its ascents, and a feeling of timelessness when you stand at the summit with clouds drifting below you.
It challenged my body, cleared my mind, and reminded me why I love the outdoors. Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or just starting out, Kodachadri welcomes you with open skies and grounded roots.
So if the mountains are calling, let this be your answer. Kodachadri is more than a trail—it’s a story, waiting for your footsteps to write the next chapter.
