Kedarkantha Trek is a magical journey that combines snowy trails, majestic Himalayan peaks, peaceful pine forests, and a sense of serenity that only the mountains can offer. Located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, this winter trek is perfect for beginners and seasoned trekkers alike. My experience on the Kedarkantha Trek was nothing short of a fairytale adventure—from crisp mountain mornings to the triumphant summit sunrise.

Journey to Sankri: The Gateway to Adventure

The trek begins with a scenic drive from Dehradun to Sankri, a quaint village nestled at 6,400 feet. The 10-hour ride, winding through pine forests and picturesque valleys, builds anticipation for what’s to come. Sankri itself is a cozy hamlet with wooden houses, tiny cafes, and a backdrop of snow-draped peaks.

Spending the night at Sankri gave me time to acclimatize, explore the village, and enjoy the warm hospitality of the locals. The chill in the air was invigorating, and I couldn’t wait to hit the trail the next morning.

Trek to Juda Ka Talab: Into the Frozen Forests

The trail from Sankri to Juda Ka Talab is a 4 km hike that takes you through dense pine and maple forests. The path is gradual but enchanting. I was surrounded by towering trees dusted with snow, their silence only broken by the occasional chirp of birds and the crunch of snow underfoot.

Juda Ka Talab, a frozen lake surrounded by thick woods, was where we set up camp. The reflection of the starlit sky on the ice was surreal. The campsite was peaceful, with bonfire stories and warm meals that made the cold feel comforting.

Climb to Kedarkantha Base Camp: Mountains Calling

The trek from Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp is slightly steeper and more challenging but rewards you with panoramic views of snow-covered peaks. As we ascended, the forest opened up to vast meadows blanketed in snow.

We reached base camp by afternoon and were greeted by views of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak. The air was crisp, and excitement buzzed in the group—tomorrow was summit day. After dinner, we tucked into our sleeping bags early, knowing we’d start before sunrise.

Summit Day: Sunrise from the Top of the World

We started the summit push at 3 AM under a sky full of stars. With headlamps on and hearts racing, we began the steep ascent. The trail was tough—snowy, narrow, and demanding. But each step was a step closer to the summit.

Reaching the Kedarkantha summit at 12,500 feet just as the sun began to rise was pure magic. The golden light hitting the snow-capped mountains was a sight I’ll never forget. From the top, we had a 360-degree view of peaks stretching into the horizon. It was emotional, empowering, and absolutely worth every ounce of effort.

Descend to Hargaon and Return to Sankri

The descent began after soaking in the summit experience. We trekked down to Hargaon, another beautiful campsite nestled in pine forests. It was more relaxed now—our hearts were full and bodies satisfied.

After one last night under the Himalayan sky, we made our way back to Sankri the following day. Leaving the trail behind was bittersweet. The memories of snowy forests, alpine meadows, and that unforgettable summit would stay with me forever.
