Into the Depths and Heights: My Thrilling Anthargange Trek Experience
Started as a casual weekend plan turned into one of the most thrilling and offbeat experiences I’ve had near Bangalore.

Some treks are about climbing high; others are about going deep. The Anthargange Trek gave me both. Located just 70 km from Bangalore, this little-known adventure combines rocky hills, volcanic boulders, and fascinating cave exploration—all wrapped in a night-time package that makes it feel like a scene out of an Indiana Jones movie. What started as a casual weekend plan turned into one of the most thrilling and offbeat experiences I’ve had near Bangalore.
Getting There: From Bangalore's Buzz to Kolar's Stillness
It all began on a Friday evening. Tired from a long week and craving an escape, I stumbled upon the idea of doing the Anthargange night trek. A group was organizing an overnight hike that included cave exploration, a summit under the stars, and a sunrise view. Within an hour, I had booked a spot and packed my essentials—headlamp, energy bars, and excitement.
Anthargange is located in Kolar, about 2 hours from Bangalore. The drive there was smooth and peaceful, with the city lights fading into darkness and the countryside slowly taking over. We reached the base by around 11 PM and after a quick briefing, we were ready to begin the climb.
The Ascent: Trekking Through Rocky Terrain in the Dark
The Anthargange hill stands at around 1,226 meters and is a mix of rocky boulders, volcanic formations, and natural caves. We started our trek around midnight, under a sky bursting with stars. Torches in hand, we moved slowly through a trail that was unlike any I had done before.
The initial stretch involved climbing over large rocks and narrow paths surrounded by thorny bushes. The terrain wasn’t too steep, but navigating it in the dark made it feel more challenging—and more fun. Our guide was great at keeping the pace, cracking jokes, and sharing local legends about the hill, which is considered sacred due to the nearby Anthargange temple and its mysterious, ever-flowing spring.
Even though the climb is relatively short—about 3 km—it felt like a full-blown adventure. Every turn brought a new rock formation, a new shadow, and a new thrill.
The Highlight: Cave Exploration at Anthargange
After about an hour of climbing, we reached the real gem of the Anthargange trekking experience—the volcanic caves. Formed by ancient lava activity, these natural caves are narrow, winding, and full of surprises. We had to crawl, slide, and squeeze through the labyrinth of rocks, guided only by our flashlights and our excitement.
This wasn’t your average touristy cave walk. We literally had to get down on all fours and slither through narrow passages, sometimes with barely enough room to breathe. It was exhilarating—and a bit scary. But that’s what made it unforgettable.
One section of the cave opened into a small chamber where we all sat in silence for a few minutes. No light, no sound—just pure darkness and the thrill of being inside the earth. It was humbling, calming, and incredibly cool.
Reaching the Summit: Stars, Stories, and Sunrise
After the caves, we continued a short trek to the summit. By now, the wind had picked up and the temperature dropped, but the adrenaline kept us warm. We reached the top around 3:30 AM and settled in for a few hours of rest and stargazing.
Lying on the rocks, wrapped in a light jacket, staring at a sky full of stars—it was the kind of peace I didn’t know I needed. We shared stories, passed around snacks, and even dozed off for a bit as we waited for the sunrise.
By 5:45 AM, the eastern sky started to glow with soft pinks and oranges. Slowly, the sun rose above the horizon, casting golden light across the rocky landscape. The view wasn’t just beautiful—it was spiritual. Watching the day begin from the top of a hill after a night of trekking and exploring caves felt like a reward.
Descending with a Smile: Morning Light and Memories
The descent was much easier with daylight on our side. What looked mysterious in the dark now appeared vibrant—jagged boulders, green patches of shrubs, and monkeys hopping from rock to rock. We reached the base by 7 AM, tired but deeply satisfied.
Before heading back to Bangalore, we stopped at a local stall for hot idlis and chai. That simple breakfast, eaten with dusty hands and sore legs, tasted better than any five-star meal.
