Melbourne has many major traits that it is known the world over for. It is an artistic city that is considered laidback, has a great coffee culture and plenty of opportunity for those who would like to immerse in its cultural hotbed. There are many galleries, beautiful pieces of architecture as well as plenty of worldwide influence. Here's how to spend 24 hours in Melbourne.

1. Take the City Circle Tram

The City Circle Tram is completely free and a great way to see the city. It operates along a circular route that will take you right around the city which is what makes it an ideal sightseeing tool. As it tends to stop at all the major attractions in the city, this makes it a great option for you especially if you are pressed for time or have no idea where to begin and what to see. The tram runs in two directions, so you can see the city either clockwise or anticlockwise and there is a tram every twelve minutes.

2. Explore Flinders Street Station

Flinders Street Station is not just a transportation hub but at the age of 100 years, one of the city's oldest icons. It was constructed in a very distinct Edwardian style with clock tower and a centralised location that makes it an attraction everyone who visits Melbourne opts to explore. There are some spectacular stained glass displays within the station which you should also check out while you are there.

3. Grab a Morning Coffee

If you are staying at one of the Melbourne city hotels be sure to go out for a morning coffee. Melbourne's coffee has achieved cult status and one sip will explain exactly why to you. The city is filled to the brim with cafés so you will be hard-pressed to pick one. Don't just settle for one coffee, try several while you are there. There are cafés in the vicinity of Flinders Street Station so make it a pit stop on your way.

4. Walk to Eureka Skydeck

If you cross the footbridge across the Yarra River, you will find yourself in Southbank. This is where you go to climb the spectacular Eureka Skydeck. It is the highest point in Melbourne and will give you unparalleled views of the pretty city limits. There are 360 degree-views as far as the eye can see so make sure that you take a camera up with you. There's also a café up there if you want to try yet another cup of Melbourne coffee. Despite it being a famous tourist experience don't ignore it just because it is popular. If you are staying in a hotel the likes of Avani Melbourne Central Residences, you can make this the last stop before you head back to your hotel for the night. Melbourne is really beautiful at night.

5. National Gallery of Victoria

The National Gallery of Victoria is where you go to steep in Melbourne's culture. It is in part a museum and in part a cultural hub, garden and gallery. Entrance is free and you can immerse yourself in history and arts that span from art exhibits to post-modern impressionism to ancient Egypt. A great place to spend a good portion of the day. This is especially a great place to visit with older children and if you are interested in art and history. There's just so much you can learn while spending time there. Afterwards, you can take a walk back to your hotel or head towards the Melbourne CBD to explore some more.
