Gracing the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it is unsurprising why Galle is such a beloved holiday destination. Its picturesque coastal roads, charming shops and UNESCO heritage site promise a magical retreat, with endless things to see and do at every corner. Get to know the ins and outs of this famed seaside getaway, with a guide to planning your dream vacation under the tropical Lankan sunshine.

Getting to Galle (And Selecting Accommodation)

Situated roughly 2 hours from Colombo, Galle is easiest to reach along the connecting highway. Highway buses with A/C and ample luggage racks are available from the Makumbura Bus Stand, located in the suburbs of Colombo. With tickets priced at around 800 LKR, and easy-to-follow timetables available in English, these buses are typically one of the easier options for travel from the city. Alternatively, if you crave a little adventure, normal SLTB buses that follow along the old coastal roads offer a cheaper, yet longer journey, with frequent stops along the way.

Due to its popularity, and proximity to an array of seaside towns dotted along the coastline, the region offers an endless collection of hotels, resorts and guesthouses. Some of the finest beachfront resorts and luxury boutique hotels in Sri Lanka are just minutes from Galle Town or the historic fort, including charming seaside and garden properties by the KK Collection Galle Sri Lanka.

A Quick Packing Guide

Before heading to Galle, it is essential to pack wisely, considering both the weather and activities on your itinerary. Bring clothing made from flowy or lightweight fabrics, ideal for the tropical climate, and beachwear for those looking to spend afternoons by your hotel's pool or on the golden shores of south Sri Lanka. Naturally, sun protection is also a must, regardless of rain or shine --- bring sunscreen with adequate SPF, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle and wide-brimmed hats. Areas with dense greenery also come with mosquitos and other insects, so it is best to add insect repellent to the list.

Most attractions in Galle are also located within the narrow alleys of the historic Fort, and walking is a must. Bring a pair of sturdy shoes for exploring the Fort and surrounding areas, in addition to comfortable sandals for the beach and flip-flops for casual outings. A guidebook and map are fun bonuses for any old-school travellers, although Google Maps has thorough information and navigation in English for sights around Galle. Finally, if you are keen on visiting any of the many fascinating temples scattered in the area, be sure to bring coverups or modest clothing.

Exploring The Historic Galle Fort

Built by the Portuguese colonists in the 16th century, the Galle Fort is arguably the most important attraction in the city, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, its historic walls and cobblestone streets are home to a patchwork of multiculturalism, from the old hotels adorned with British Victorian architecture to the weathered bricks of the bastions. Learn about the history of the region at the Fort's museums, or explore the lighthouse and ramparts looming over the Indian Ocean. Be sure to check the entry prices and opening times of the museums and historic buildings beforehand.

The Fort is also lined with an eclectic mix of boutiques, art galleries and cafes, housed in heritage buildings and charming storefronts.

Where To Eat

Within and around Fort, Galle offers a diverse culinary scene, featuring both local Sri Lankan dishes and international cuisine, as well as a showcase of the abundant seafood caught fresh around the region. Located within the fort, the renovated Dutch Hospital shopping precinct boasts a range of eateries, one of the best spots to go to for craft cocktails and brunches. Additionally, restaurants offering a variety of international fare can be found within the Fort, including Chambers for Middle-Eastern cuisine, The Tuna & The Crab for contemporary Japanese seafood, and Maru Poké Cafe for hearty bowls of the Hawaiian classic. For a taste of local flavours, A Minute By Tuk Tuk serves up unique, innovative twists on Sri Lankan Cuisine, while Tiny Hotel and Hela Bojun Hala are go-to local favourites for classic Sri Lankan dishes cooked to perfection.

Shopping Experiences

Finally, back within the Fort, shopping is another delightful experience. The streets showcase an impressive collection of art galleries, selling unique souvenirs, gifts and works from both Sri Lankan and international artists. Handicrafts and Textiles are also sold extensively within the Fort, namely flowy batik dresses, traditional statement decor and intricate jewellery. Galle is also home to numerous antique stores and stalls filled with treasures from the colonial era --- rummage through fascinating collections for unique furniture, decorative items, and vintage collectables
