If you’ve stumbled upon Weligama, congratulations! You’ve found a charming beach town for a lovely vacation - amongst the hues and breeze of the turquoise seas. It is a surf spot – perfect for beach days and lazy, hazy sunny times to escape into bliss. Without further ado, let’s plan the perfect beach holiday to Weligama.

The best time to visit Weligama?

If you wish to avoid torrential rains, plan your visit to Weligama between December and March. During this period, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Weligama without getting interrupted by sudden showers and thunderstorms. But, in December tourists flock to the beaches and prices skyrocket. You could check with local hotels to see if they offer early bird discounts. The shoulder months for coastal holidays in Sri Lanka are April and November. You can even plan your wellness holiday at Sri Lanka Ayurveda Resort in one of these months to avoid crowds.

How to get around in Weligama

Weligama is a small town, and it is easy to walk around to get to the beach and back. When you feel like exploring attractions a little further away, hire a tuk-tuk. A good rule of thumb is to find a reliable tuk-tuk driver and get his or her number. That way, you can call your driver whenever you want to venture far. Local buses are a good alternative for short distances. Bus fare is cheap, and they operate between 15 intervals.

Surf lessons

Weligama beach is dotted with surf schools and lean-bodied surfers having a gala. You can join in the fun. The waves are perfect for amateurs to learn the art of surfing. The waves are not too daunting and tend to be predictable. However, before you book surf lessons, check the surf school’s credentials, and read reviews.

Secret beach time

There is a hidden beach along the coast of Weligama. Some maps call it Sampath Beach, but you can ask your tuk-tuk driver to take you there. The beach area is a small nook with a rocky outcrop right in front of it. There is a big, semi-abandoned building in front of the secret beach – if you’re looking for a landmark. And a dirt path leads to the beach. You can roll out a beach mat and spend a tranquil afternoon there. When you feel thirsty, get a freshly cut coconut from one of the stalls by the beach.

Handungoda tea estate visit

This beautiful tea estate is located about 25 minutes away from Weligama town. You can walk through the pleasantly green tea plantation and check out the cinnamon, coconut, and rubber plots nearby. There is a tea factory where you can go on a tour. The estate produces virgin white tea which goes through a special plucking process. At the end of your tour, try some fragrant tea along with a piece of cake. You can even buy some flavoured tea or virgin white tea to take back home.

Enjoy some spa time

Pamper yourself with a few Ayurvedic spa sessions at your resort. You can choose between the treatment options they offer. But it is a good idea to let them also have a word about which treatment will work for you. Ayurvedic spa treatment is generally tailored to bring about your well-being. Expect a few questions about your health and lifestyle in the beginning. This is how they match the treatment to your health issues. Start your spa session with a soothing herbal drink and get into a healing bath. They will use essential oils and herbs to give you a therapeutic massage.
