Located in the Asian continent, in between India, Burma and Nepal is a beautiful country called Bangladesh. The place has a rich culture revolving around Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism which affects the dress code of the people here. As an ethical tourist, it would be best to follow the norm in the country so as not to stand out too much. Here are a few things to keep in mind about clothes when visiting Bangladesh.
Dress modest but stylish
If you didn't know already, about 90% of the local population here belong to the Muslim religion which means the dress code here is to always cover-up, especially for women. You don't want to get unfriendly stares while you are off exploring by both men and women after all.
Wondering what clothes to pack? The ideal would be, long skirts and pants, long-sleeved shirts and basically anything that covers your body fully. Together with the culture of Bangladesh, you'll have to think about the weather as well, it's quite humid and hot here, so you don't want to boil in your clothing. This is why cotton and linen clothing are the best options here. Loose-fitting items are even better as you will sweat a lot. The shalwar kameez that the local ladies wear often is also loved by many tourists. The outfit consists of a long, loose-fitting shalwar top with long loose-fitting pants or leggings. A shawl is used as an accessory.
Packing for the weather
The winter months are from November to February which is a little chilly but not an unbearable cold. Pack in a few jackets and that would do fin to keep you all warmed up. The monsoon season is from June to October and the rains can be bothersome, so do try not to visit during this period. Keep an umbrella at the ready at all times if you do happen to be here at that time. This is the off-peak season, so hotels in Dhaka the likes of Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka do offer great deals if you are on a budget. The summer is quite hot and apart from very light fabric clothing, the sunhat and sunscreen are a must. Don't forget to include in the sunnies in your luggage too.
Shoes to take
When it comes to shoes, take a pair of sneakers as they will match almost any outfit. Besides your feet can get dirty so covered shoes are best. Stylish flats are a wonderful match for any outfit as well and easy to walk in too so avoid heels. Flipflops are the most important of all, when you are at the hotel and want to visit the beach.
Tips for ladies
Keep a scarf or a shawl with you to cover your head if the heat gets too unbearable. Also, keep in mind that some religious places will not allow you in if you don't cover your head. So, having a scarf or shawl in your backpack could be really convenient. Once again, wear clothing that completely covers your body, hands, legs and cleavage or worse than stares, you might even get touched! The humidity is so high in Bangladesh that every day you spend here is going to be a bad hair day, so wear a hat, tie your hair up or clip it to keep it neat.
Tips for gentlemen
Men can wear dress the way they like, but linen pants and soft cotton shirts and t-shirts will keep you cool and less sweaty. Wear sunnies and a hat to protect yourself from the heat as well.
