How to Get Around Sri Lanka on Your Vacation
Transportation Tips - Everything Travellers Need to Know About Exploring Sri Lanka Using Public and Private Transport Options
Sri Lanka, one of the smallest countries in South Asia, is a destination packed with a wide variety of attractions in a small area. It comprises stunning coastal cities, rugged mountainscapes, and lush, verdant flatlands, making it a challenge for first-time visitors to navigate. From using local buses and trains to finding the right taxi and three-wheel apps, here are some of the best ways to get around this paradise island.
Bus Services
Connecting visitors with nearly every nook and cranny of the island, the public and private bus networks in Sri Lanka crisscross the nation with staggering efficiency and reliability. As the most budget-friendly transport option accessible to tourists, hopping on a bus can take visitors to every major city, village and municipality in the country. Ideal for navigating the busy capital city of Colombo and other tourist hotspots including Kandy, Galle and Anuradhapura, long-distance bus services also offer travellers the chance to visit far-flung areas of the island. Those who wish to visit the central hills, the Cultural Triangle or the northernmost state of Jaffna will find long-distance buses departing daily for these destinations from the Fort Bus Depot. Both A/C and non A/C buses are available with the fare for air-conditioned buses costing up to three times more.
Train Travel
Although trains are not suitable for navigating the inner-city hotspots in Sri Lanka, they are fantastic for long-distance journeys around the island. Boasting some of the most scenic train rides in Asia, the railway network in Sri Lanka is just as extensive as the public bus lines. The low cost of train tickets and the overall comfort of the journey is what makes train travel a big hit with seasoned visitors. The only downside to using train services instead of the public bus service is that trains tend to take more time to reach the intended destinations. But those on the lookout for breathtaking sightseeing opportunities while travelling will find the Nanu Oya to Ella railway journey one of the most captivating commutes in Sri Lanka.
Taxi Cabs
Taxis are a more expensive transportation option in the country. Metered taxis operate in Colombo and most major towns in Sri Lanka, but the fare per kilometre is higher compared to bus and train rates for the same distance. Taxis are convenient for groups and families with small children, especially on rainy days and for short shopping trips around Colombo. While taxis can be hailed outside malls and other popular landmarks, better rates are available when travellers use local taxi booking apps such as Uber and PickMe.
Tuk-Tuks
As another mode of transport that is mostly suitable for short transfers and distances, tuk-tuks can be just as costly as using a taxi in some parts of Sri Lanka. This is due to the fact that most three-wheelers are not metered outside of those operating in Colombo. While tuk-tuks are great for popping by the shops or visiting a nearby restaurant or attraction, the cost of this bumpy ride cannot often be justified over long distances. The high fares quoted by dubious drivers are another reason why tuk-tuks should be a last resort for travellers.
Domestic Flights
Tourists based at Aitken Spence hotels and some of the best hotels in Sri Lanka can also travel to certain parts of the island via domestic flights. While it may not be a feasible option for travellers on a budget, flying to Sigiriya, the southern coastal belt and the northern reaches of the island is a possibility due to the handful of domestic carriers operating in Sri Lanka.
Vehicle Rentals
Rental cars are a great alternative for those with an international driving license even if driving in Colombo, Kandy and other big cities can prove challenging for those unaccustomed to driving in South Asia. The cost of renting a car or van may also prove economical for those who intend to spend a month or more in the country.
