The chilly hills of the central highlands are by far one of the most pleasing of surrounds that a holidaymaker can think of voyaging to when in Sri Lanka. Amongst the most popular regions in the country is the historic and picturesque citadel of Kandy which is worth its weight in gold for those enthused by adventurous pursuits. Whilst getting to Kandy is a journey in itself, visiting every corner of the city and its immediate vicinity can afford quite the leisure trip that one may be looking for. Provided is an outline of how best you can cover all parts of this fascinating locale.

Buses

The prospect of hailing a bus at the main bus station in Kandy will present travelers like you with an experience that will far surpass your wildest dreams. Whilst inter-city buses are available should you be traveling to other parts of the country such as Ella which also holds its own as a tourist hotspot in Sri Lanka, none equals the at times bumpy ride that a journey in a private bus will entail. Though, being easy on the purse, the ride itself may have you hanging on for dear life during certain points of your trip owing largely in part to the twisty bends and curves that dot the city and its surrounding towns and villages. Should you be a first-time traveller to Sri Lanka, it would be best to either obtain the services of a travel guide or query the place of your accommodation on what would best suit you in terms of getting about Kandy.

Tuk-tuk

Referred to as auto-rickshaws, three-wheelers and the more popular 'tuk-tuk', utilizing the services of such a vehicle will leave you with more memories of Sri Lanka than you perhaps, may have originally planned on taking back home with you. Known for being able to deftly evade traffic in ways best known to the driver, a tuk-tuk ride is arguably, one of the hair-raising yet enjoyable activities that any visitor to the country can have. For starters, if you have a list of places to get to within Kandy or its suburbs ranging from the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Udawattakele Sanctuary, and the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, jumping into a tuk will be the way forward for you. Further, as three-wheelers with metered taxis are a common sight in the city, journeys are made all the more convenient as you basically pay for the number of kilometers covered. In this way, no form of bargaining will be required.

Hire a taxi

This would make more sense should you be arriving from cities such as Colombo from where private vehicle hires are a thing of the past. Service providers such as Uber Intercity or PickMe can be sought where an array of vehicles can be selected, depending on your itinerary and budget. This way, you will also have access to a driver who will guarantee that you reach your destination as per schedule.

Car rentals

For all those with a "do it yourself" attitude, hiring a car or even a van for that matter will mean that you are in complete control of your journey with the flexibility to pick and choose when to leave one particular attraction or area in Kandy. Should you be accommodated at Hunas Falls Hotel Kandy which is one of the hill country hotels in Sri Lanka worth being at, then do consult the hotel staff on what ways are most utilised to get around Kandy so that such means fall in line with your expectations of a holiday, out in these sublime environs.
