So just about two hours ago I set foot in Iceland for the first time. As of writing, I am in my shuttle bus that is going to be taking me to my hostel. This is my second time traveling abroad on my own, but with meeting up with friends and in tour groups, I’m never really alone. Iceland is one of the countries I’ve always wanted to go to and now I can cross it off my bucket list.
But just because it’s off my list, it doesn’t mean I’m finished with Iceland already. Of course not, I’ve only just got here. However, there is still a lot more I want to do here, so I thought whilst I was waiting, I would write about my first reactions to Iceland.
1. It’s expensive.
One of the things I picked up straight away was how high the prices are compared to other countries. But I was aware of this anyway and it didn’t stop me from not wanting to go. It’s places like these where you have to learn to spend your money wisely and think before you buy. On the plus side, it may help me lose some weight with all the walking and healthy food out here, so that’s good.
2. It’s cold.
Of course, it’s not called Iceland for nothing. Even with my best winter clothes, I still felt frosty when wind slapped my face. Packing was a nightmare, having to pack not only warm clothes, but enough to last a whole week and some spare shoes if I need. Hopefully, I’m well prepared for whatever weather comes my way in Reykjavík.
3. It’s cozy.
I called in at one of the cafes in the airport whilst waiting for my bus. I loved the quirky decor along with the nice selections of coffees, shakes, and juices. One of the juices was even named after a certain superhero played by Hugh Jackman. Everyone seems very relaxed and friendly.
So these are my first impressions of Iceland. So far I’m liking it. I already predicted all three of these, but I think Iceland still has a few more surprises up it’s sleeve.
Some people want me to buy some gifts for them and another friend of mine has asked me to say hello to a local troll. I’m also hoping to see a good friend of mine. Before you ask, she’s not the troll.
Now the bus has made its move, I’m going to use this as an opportunity to do some sightseeing. I’ve already seen luscious waters and glacier mountains. If I’m lucky, I might get to go to the blue lagoon and see the Northern Lights.
I paid £44 for the bus shuttle service, but I think it’s one of the best buses I’ve ever used. Lots of space, reliable wifi, and a USB charger to charge my phone. It’s come in handy.
Whilst it is still early days, I think I’m going to settle just fine. The time zones are the same as the UK and I can use my phone abroad with no issues. Looking forward to seeing what my hostel is like; from the pictures they look stunning.
I’ve been asked to take lots and lots of pictures, which I will do. I think it’s going to be a big adventure.
Despite only being in Iceland for a few hours, the time seems to have gone so quick. I feel as if I’ve only been in Iceland for about 10 minutes. The bus journey has already given us more scenic views of a Dominos Pizza and Subway next together to what seems to be in the middle of nowhere. The roads feel quiet, clear, and very straightforward.
The bright sky and dried grass would make you think that you’re in the middle of a desert road, but outside is chilly. It wouldn’t surprise me if there was snow.
