7 Scenic Train Rides in Switzerland You Can’t Miss

By Radhiya FuratPublished 9 months ago 3 min read

There’s something uniquely peaceful about watching the world glide by from the window of a train—especially when that world looks like a postcard. During my journey across Switzerland, I quickly realized that the trains here are more than just a way to get around—they're experiences in their own right. Every route felt like I was traveling through a live painting, with snow-capped peaks, turquoise lakes, charming villages, and meadows straight out of a fairytale.

If you’re dreaming of exploring Switzerland, here are seven scenic train rides that completely stole my heart—and should definitely be on your list.

1. Glacier Express

This one is a showstopper. They call it the slowest express train in the world, but that’s the point. The Glacier Express glides from Zermatt to St. Moritz over seven stunning hours. Along the way, I passed through 91 tunnels and 291 bridges, each revealing yet another jaw-dropping view. The panoramic windows made it feel like the Alps were right in my lap.

2. Bernina Express

The Bernina Express, from Chur to Tirano, Italy, is an absolute dream. It took me from glacial landscapes into sunny Italian towns in a matter of hours. The best part? Crossing the famous Landwasser Viaduct. I’ll admit—I got goosebumps. The engineering, the backdrop, the experience... all unforgettable.

3. GoldenPass Line

This route took me from Lucerne to Lake Geneva, via Interlaken and Zweisimmen. It felt like flipping through pages of a travel magazine. Picture lake views, alpine forests, and charming wooden chalets. I even sat in one of their Belle Époque-style coaches, which made the ride feel like a scene from an old European film.

4. Gotthard Panorama Express

I hopped on this train in Lucerne and cruised to Lugano, combining a lake cruise and a train ride. It was a beautiful way to see central Switzerland’s changing landscapes—starting with the tranquil Lake Lucerne and ending in the sun-soaked Italian-speaking region of Ticino. Bonus: it’s less crowded than the bigger-name routes.

5. Voralpen Express

This might not be the most famous train, but it became one of my personal favorites. Running from St. Gallen to Lucerne, it offered a slice of rural life that’s easy to miss. Rolling hills, peaceful farmlands, and small villages—it felt like being let in on a secret.

6. Interlaken to Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe)

Taking the cogwheel train up to Jungfraujoch was surreal. I was literally climbing into the clouds. It’s Europe’s highest railway station, and once at the top, you’re treated to views of the Aletsch Glacier and surrounding peaks that left me speechless. It’s a bit pricey, but trust me—worth every franc.

7. Mont-Blanc Express

Last but definitely not least, this cross-border beauty runs from Martigny in Switzerland to Chamonix in France. What stood out? The dramatic climb through deep alpine gorges and the sudden, breathtaking views of the Mont-Blanc massif. It felt more like a rollercoaster than a train ride—but in the best way.

Every one of these train rides added a different flavor to my Swiss adventure. What I loved most was how effortless it was to get around—Swiss public transport is a dream. If you’re planning a trip and want to see as much as possible without stress, these scenic train journeys are a must.

And if all the planning feels like a lot (I get it!), there are some fantastic Switzerland tour packages that include these iconic train rides, accommodations, and local guides to make the journey even smoother. For those who prefer more flexibility, Switzerland holiday packages let you choose your own route, hop off where you like, and tailor your adventure your way.

Either way, the trains are waiting. And so are the mountains.
