The Relaxed American's Tour

Dragon Bridge in Da Nang, Vietnam

Hello, travelers! So, if you're thinking about heading to Vietnam, let me tell you about Da Nang—it totally won me over and probably added some calories to my diet with its awesome food. It's tucked between those gorgeous mountains and stunning beaches that make Da Nang just the perfect blend of nature, history, and modern cool. Let me further elaborate on my unforgettable time as I checked out this coastal paradise.

1. Scaling the Marble Mountains: A Little Adventure

The Marble Mountains aren't just attractive hills; they're like a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' novel. Five peaks fester with ancient caves, secret temples, and stunning views. I hiked up to the top of the Huyen Khong Cave—not exactly an easy hike—and found this serenely beautiful Buddha statue lit up by the sun through a natural light above its head. Quite magical!

Pro Tip: If you are too lazy to take the staircases, take the elevator halfway up, but go hiking to the top—the views are Instagram-worthy.

2. Joyful Awakening at My Khe Beach

My Khe beach in Danang

Imagine this: I sit with a coconut on My Khe Beach, listening to waves gently lapping the shoreline. To some veterans, it is known as "China Beach," and it is a great spot to swim, relax, or try your hand at some water sports, like paddleboarding. I went there at sunrise, and truthfully, I felt like I had just stepped into a picture postcard.

If you best things to do in da nang list can have only one place, then I would include My khe beach definitely!

Beach Hack: Get a beach chair and an umbrella inexpensively, and just sit while the salty breeze does what it will.

3. A Fire-Spewing Dragon? Please!

You can't miss it: bold, gold, and breathing real fire on the weekends. I found a riverside café, ordered a cold beer, and watched the show. The dragon bursts alive with colors and lights, spitting fire and water in the air in a kaleidoscope. It's a vibe, really.

4. Feeling at the Top of the World: Ba Na Hills

Ba na hills view from top

It sounds wild, but just imagine being flown into a French village on a mountain in Vietnam. That's Ba Na Hills: flying upwards with a cable car, just like through a cloud forest, and that Golden Bridge held by the giant stone hands, so popular on Instagram, can be something extraterrestrial.

You just need to see the Fantasy Park, something like small Disneyland, and the wine cellar hidden beneath the garden.

5. Cham Museum: Checking out the Past

The Cham Museum was also completely something I nerded out on, as it's full of sculptures and cool stuff coming from the Champa Kingdom, more than a thousand years old. If you are not into history, the craftsmanship and the stories behind the pieces will surely amaze you.

6. Son Tra Peninsula: Snigging into the Jungle

My visit to nature was the Son Tra Peninsula. Driving upward on those twisty roads, I stopped near the Linh Ung Pagoda to check out that big ol' Lady Buddha overseeing the city. And get this? I saw some monkeys swinging in the trees!

PS: Beware of those douc langurs of the red-shanked variety, though so colorful, seldom seen.

7. Chowing Down in Da Nang

Hello, let's talk about the food! Da Nang street food is exceptionally good. Follow these:

Mi Quang: Thick rice noodles in a savory broth garnished with pork, shrimp, and peanuts. Comfort in a bowl.

Banh Xeo: Crispy pancakes filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts—just wrap 'em up in rice paper and dip them in sauce, trust me!

Seafood: Just try the seafood restaurants lining the beach. Fresh crab, grilled squid? Yes, absolutely!

Pro Tip: Get your cheap eats and fine vibes at the night markets.

8. Hoi An Day Tour

Hoi an Japanese bridge

Well, I know Hoi An isn't technically in Da Nang, but it's just a 30-minute drive over, and you have to see it. This old-school town is full of cobblestone streets, bright lanterns, and riverside vibes. I rented a bike and rode through the alleys; I even had a custom-tailored suit made for myself.

Full-Moon Lantern Festival anyone? Pure magic.

What to do: Take a boat ride down the Thu Bon River and let those glowing lanterns show the way.

9. Amusement at Asia Park

If traveling with kids or wanting to feel like one again, Asia Park is a blast. I rode up the Sun Wheel, one of the world's tallest Ferris wheels, for insane 360° views of Da Nang. Also, there's a row of some fun cultural zones one can take pictures inside while learning a thing or two about different Asian cultures.

10. Chillin’ at Nui Than Tai Hot Springs Park

Nui Than Tai Hot Springs Park

After all that adventuring, I gave myself a day of pampering in the Nui Than Tai Hot Springs Park—serious mud baths, mineral pools, and even a lazy river, like a spa day combined with an amusement park. Seriously, your muscles will thank you later
