Best Places to Visit in Japan

Creating a bucket list for the best places to visit in Japan.

When it comes to visiting Japan, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of unique places worth checking out. The truth is that Japan is an iconic location full of wonder, serenity, and unique features.

Naturally, that means the list of places to visit is quite vast! Below, you’ll find a (brief) list of places to visit when heading to Japan. Enjoy, and don’t forget to document your experiences!

Kiyotsu Gorge and the Tunnel of Light, Niigata prefecture

If you’re looking for a natural marvel, visit Niigata prefecture. More specifically, make time for Kiyotsu Gorge. It’s made up of natural volcanic columns (columnar jointing, for those looking for the technical term), which overlook a river. It makes for a dramatic view, to say the least!

In 1988, Ma Yansong and the MAD Architects built a Tunnel of Light, which allows visitors to safely obtain a panoramic view of the area. It is worth the trek.

Naoshima

Conversely, if you’re looking for Japanese architecture, you must visit Naoshima. It was once a rural island but is now lauded for its stunning architecture and design. The island boasts a unique blend of architecture, making it worth hours of studying. It’s a must-visit location for anyone looking for something special.

Naoshima is also the perfect location for art lovers, as countless outdoor sculptures are worth investigating (and photographing).

Mount Fuji

Naturally, Mount Fuji is another natural marvel worth visiting in Japan. It’s a rare and perfectly symmetrical peak offering a high summit. In other words, it’ll be a trek to get there - but the view will be worth it. Thousands of people climb it every year just to see the sights and get a few perfect photos.

Pro tip: the best time to visit Mount Fuji is between July 1 and September 15. This is the official season of the mountain. While this means it will be more crowded, it is also a safer time, as you’ll miss the rainy season and snow.

Yakushima

Yakushima is another small island off the coast of Japan. It’s described as one of the most magical places in the world and with good reason. The ancient forests of the island have an otherworldly feel. You’ll want to take your time and trek through the available trails.

This is also a perfect destination for anime fans, as the landscapes within Yakushima inspired the famous movie Princess Mononoke.

Hakone

If you’re looking for a view of Mount Fuji, Hakone is one of the best places to visit. Hakone is a Japanese landmark, easily accessible from Tokyo. There’s lots to do in the area, including sightseeing! The view from Lake Ashi (in Akone) is breathtaking. It’s one of the best places to see Mount Fuji, as you’ll be less likely to find a few obstructed by fog or other obstacles.

Oirase Gorge, Aomori

The mountains of Aomori are a famous autumn destination, as the colored foliage and splashing waters make for a captivating view. Oirase Stream is full of moss-covered boulders, making a sharp contrast to the orange and red foliage found in fall.

Osaka

If vibrant nightlife is more your style, you’ll want to visit Osaka. Osaka is famous for its food and clubs, so you won’t want to miss out. Osaka, the third-largest city in Japan, has plenty to offer. There are countless street vendors to pick food from (try the takoyaki), bright signs, and one of the oldest merchant centers.

Nara

Nara, once known as Heijo, used to be the governmental center of Japan. As such, there are countless shrines and temples within the area. Nara Park is a highlight, including national treasures such as ancient (and massive) pagodas.

Pro tip: Make time to visit Todai-ji Temple, as it has some of the most impressive architecture in the area. It also houses the famously large Great Buddha statue.
