If you’re looking for a weekend escape from city life, the Andharban Trek near Tamhini Ghat, Maharashtra, is a perfect choice. Known as the “dark forest,” Andharban is a lush, misty jungle filled with waterfalls, streams, and dense greenery. Trekking here feels like stepping into a living painting — every turn reveals a new surprise.

I did this trek during the monsoon, and it was magical. The forest was alive with the sound of flowing water and chirping birds, and the mist gave the entire trail a mysterious vibe. Crossing small streams, walking under bamboo groves, and seeing the Kundalika Valley below made the trek unforgettable.

Trail Highlights and Experience

The trek is about 13–14 km, starting from Pimpri village and ending at Bhira Dam. It’s mostly a downhill trail, which is easier on the legs but still requires caution, especially during rains when rocks and paths become slippery. I loved the variety — from dark forest patches to open valleys and waterfalls. A rain jacket, trekking shoes, and a stick or pole help a lot on tricky patches.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time for Andharban is June to October, when the forest is lush and waterfalls are flowing. Winters (November to February) are good for dry trekking, though the greenery is less vibrant. Summers are hot and not as scenic.

How to Reach

Andharban is easily accessible from Mumbai (130 km) and Pune (70 km). The nearest railway station is Lonavala, and from there, you can hire a cab to Pimpri village. Most trekkers start early in the morning and complete the trek by afternoon.

Nearby Attractions

After the trek, you can visit:

Tamhini Ghat for waterfalls and scenic drives

Devkund Waterfall for a refreshing dip

Mulshi Lake to relax and enjoy nature

Tips for Trekkers

Hire a local guide if it’s your first time.

Carry water, snacks, and rain protection.

Wear good trekking shoes.

Respect the forest and trek quietly for the best experience.

The Andharban Trek is perfect for monsoon lovers and nature enthusiasts. It’s peaceful, adventurous, and rejuvenating. Every step through this “dark forest” makes you feel closer to nature and gives you memories that last a lifetime.
