Chapter 1: The Missing Passport
It was a busy morning at the Jomo Kenyatta International airport Nairobi, and I was checking in passengers for a flight to Paris. Everything was going smoothly until I came across a young couple who looked very nervous and anxious. They handed me their boarding passes which I scanned, but when I asked for their passports, they both froze.
"Um, we don't have them," the man said sheepishly.
"What do you mean you don't have them?" I asked incredulously.
"Well, we left them at home," the woman explained.
"At home? Where is home?" I asked.
"About two hours away," the man said.
"Two hours away? And you didn't realize you forgot your passports until now?" I asked.
"We were in a hurry, we overslept, we had a lot of luggage, we didn't think..." they started to babble.
I sighed and shook my head. "I'm sorry, but you can't board this flight without your passports. You'll have to go back and get them or book another flight."
"But we can't miss this flight!" the woman exclaimed. "We have a hotel reservation, we have tickets for the Eiffel Tower, we have a romantic dinner planned..."
"I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do," I said firmly. "You need your passports to enter France. It's the law."
"Can't you make an exception?" the man pleaded. "Can't you call someone? Can't you let us through?"
"No, no and no," I said. "It's not up to me, it's up to the immigration authorities. And they won't let you through without your passports. Trust me, I've seen it happen before."
The couple looked at each other with despair and started to argue. They blamed each other for forgetting their passports, they blamed me for being unhelpful, they blamed the airline for being unreasonable. They made a scene and attracted the attention of other passengers and staff. They refused to leave the counter and demanded to speak to my supervisor.
I called my supervisor over and explained the situation. He repeated what I had said and told them they had to leave. They still refused and started to shout and curse. He called security who had them escorted away from the counter.
I watched them go with a mix of pity and annoyance. I felt sorry for them, but I also felt angry that they wasted my time and caused a whole lot of trouble. I wondered how on earth they could be so careless and irresponsible. How could they forget their passports? How could they expect me to bend the rules for them? And above all, who ruins a vacation of a lifetime with such kind of carelessness.
I shook my head and moved on to the next passenger. He smiled at me and handed me his passport.
"Thank you for your patience," he said kindly.
I smiled back and thanked him for his cooperation.
I scanned his passport and checked him in.
He wished me a good day and walked away.
I wished him a good flight and continued with my job.
