A Solo Traveler’s Guide to Nepal

Guide to Nepal

By Noren JacksonPublished 6 months ago 2 min read

The majestic mountains of the Himalayas, beautiful spiritual destinations and welcoming people have all made Nepal a destination that more people are willing to visit on their own. No more Nepal Tour Packages, meaning you have no guide telling you how and what to do, but you can do whatever interests you in the best of ways within Nepal, and discover yourself as well.

The following is the handbook of a solo traveller to finding his way around the magic of Nepal:

Safety First (and Always): Nepal is mostly safe also to solo (and female) travelers. And, of course, common sense should be applied. Watch your environment, particularly during night. Stay in illuminated places, take a reputed vehicle (ride-sharing apps such as Pathao and InDrive are in the city), and tell someone about your schedule. With too many people around petty theft may take place, hence securing of valuables.

Staying Options: Nepal is an excellent place when it comes to affordable accommodation. Hostels are good at meeting fellow travelers and usually arrange social activities. Guesthouses are more localised and less noisy. Teahouses can be found in trekking areas, supplying basic and convenient food and accommodation. Homestays are a good option when you want a strong cultural immersion.

Getting Around:

In Cities: There is the availability of rickshaws, taxis, and ride sharing apps. The most practical way of trying to discover bustling regions such as the Thamel in Kathmandu is by walking.

Between Cities: There are public buses that are inexpensive but pushy and sluggish. The tourist buses also have greater comfort and direct services through prime tourist destinations such as Pokhara and Chitwan. Domestic flights are advantageous in terms of time and disadvantageous in terms of money.

Trekking Alone: Some of the famous trails such as the Annapurna Base Camp or the Poon hill trail are also able to be completed alone (usually with a porter-guide; as a precaution and convenience measure). When visiting be sure to get permits required (TIMS card and conservation area permits). Tell your guesthouse what route you are taking, take more cash (ATMs are hard to find in the mountains) and take layers as it can be freezing cold one day and blisteringly hot the next. A small group trek would be good company and reinforcement in terms of mutual safety.

Food & Beverages: Food is really inexpensive, particularly when you conform to eating Nepali foodstuff (Dal bhat will be your purchasing buddy!). In cities, basic accommodation, local food, and transportation will cost you more or less 20-30 USD per day. The cost of trekking differs depending on the location and budget about 25-40 USD/day on food and accommodation in teahouses.

Connectivity: Good luck with local sim cards Ncell or NTC that is not a problem easy to receive and have internet which is needed in navigation and contact to others.

Welcome the Unpredictable: Nepal is a spontaneous place. Of course, it is a good idea to have an overall itinerary, but leave space to make unexpected discoveries, stop and have the chai and talk with locals, following the worthwhile side-street to a remote temple.

Conclusion:

Independent travel in Nepal is a rich experience and an opportunity to get in touch with yourself and the place. These tricks will make your Nepal Holiday Packages your own adventure, the adventure of personal discovery, revealing new things about Nepal and indelible memories.
