One of the most glorious treasures of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer is a city of history, heritage, culture, adventure, and incredible experiences. Appearing like a mysterious oasis in the desert, the city is rather a spectacular travel destination in India. Discover a rare kind of natural beauty, forts, palaces, and temples that are hundreds of years old, a freshwater lake, hilly sand dunes, and caravans of nomadic tribes, open-air markets, colorful culture and some of the best memories. Jaisalmer tour packages suit your plans for an exciting family vacation, a romantic honeymoon, exhilarating adventure, or solo backpacking.

Perched on the edge of the Thar Desert, the golden city of Jaisalmer is renowned for its bounteous golden dunes. The best time to visit Jaisalmer is between the months from November to February, the peak months of winter.

If you are planning a Jaisalmer tour, know the 7 travel tips before visiting.

Do not miss to visit the breathtaking Jaisalmer Fort

The Jaisalmer Fort is listed among the Hill Forts of Rajasthan listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India. Overlooking the city from a vantage point, the yellow-sandstone fortress shines in a golden hue when sunlight falls upon it.

The Golden Fort also lends the city the name of the ‘Golden City of Rajasthan’. In the 11th century walled fortress, there are beautiful temples, ancient wells, intricate stone-carved designs, and many other treasures of history.

Making the Jaisalmer Fort different from others is, it’s not just a heritage site but a living fort with families residing inside. It is like a glimpse of an ancient fairytale land with much to see and do. Jaisalmer Fort is one of the must-visit places during the Jaisalmer trip.

With the most gorgeous views of the whole city, the fortress is dotted with various cafés and eateries to enjoy ‘sunset view’ or ‘city view’ and amazing photo opportunities while getting a bite. Sit and soak the charms of Jaisalmer.

Get lost in the ancient market streets

Like the antique rustic city of Jaisalmer, the ancient markets are a must-visit. Walk through the by-lanes and get your hands on some fantastic bargains of souvenirs, locally-produced scarves, shawls, semi-precious stones, jewelry, singing bowls, antiques, and carpets.

Do not miss out to admire all the Havelis

Havelis in Jaisalmer are specimens of incredible architecture, the grandeur of the olden days and its total feel of the other world. Admiring the Havelis on a Jaisalmer tour is a must-do.

The most wonderful Havelis in Jaisalmer include the Patwon ki Haveli. The largest haveli in the city, the 5-storied building was commissioned by Guman Chand Patwa, who was a wealthy jewelry trader. For his 5 sons, he ordered the construction of 5 stories in a magnificent design and layout that displayed his grand status.

Another sight not to miss out on is, Nathmalji ki Haveli, also believed to be the most beautiful Havelis in Jaisalmer. Built as the residence of the then Prime Minister of Jaisalmer, Diwan Mohata Nathmal, and the beautiful palace was built by two brothers who were not traditional stone-carving craftsmen but jewelers.

The haveli is Islamic and Rajputana architecture, with a bit of an irregular shape. The extraordinary outer carvings are filled with beautiful interiors and equipped with modern facilities.

The tour of the Havelis in Jaisalmer includes the Salim Singh ki Haveli. Nicknamed the Peacock Haveli it is a 300-year-old structure built over an even older haveli. To date, it is still occupied today by a descendant of its original owner.

The Jaisalmer Fort Palace Museum & Heritage Center, which was a former royal residence, is also a must-visit. And since it’s about architecture, visit the Bada Bagh, a royal cemetery with grand cenotaphs.

Chill out at Gadsisar Lake

A lake in the desert sounds incredulous and that is the Gadsisar Lake. The views from all sides of the lake are stunning. Sunset is especially a beautiful time to watch the colors of the sky change. Enjoy the lake itself by riding one of the swan boats around for a while.

Take a camel safari to the dunes

A visit to Jaisalmer remains incomplete without exploring the sand dunes of the Thar Desert dunes. A camel safari is undoubtedly the best way to enjoy the desert. From riding the ‘ship of the desert’ camels to basking in the beauty of a sunset to camping under the stars; it is an experience to cherish.

Stay at a royal palace or an inspired residence

When it's Rajasthan’s favorite royal city do not miss out on a royal experience. Enjoy a lavish stay at a heritage property or one inspired by the grandeur of the olden days.

Plan a Jaisalmer trip during the Jaisalmer Desert Festival

The Jaisalmer Desert Festival is a spectacular celebration of the desert and definitely the best time for visitors. Every year in February, the desert comes to life with colors, acrobats, singers, dancers and so much more.
