  6. Let's use International Women's Day as a call to action to support and uplift women in all aspects of life, from the workplace to the home to the community.

March 8th is considered International Women's Day because it is a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world. It is a day to recognize and honor the progress that women have made in the fight for gender equality, as well as to acknowledge the challenges that still exist.

The day was first observed in the early 1900s, as a result of various social and political movements that were happening around the world at that time.

The origins of International Women's Day can be traced back to the early 20th century, when women in various countries began to organize and protest for their rights. In 1908, a group of women in New York City marched for better working conditions and the right to vote. The following year, a group of women in Copenhagen, Denmark held an International Women's Conference to discuss women's suffrage and other issues related to women's rights.

In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding better pay, shorter work hours, and voting rights. The following year, the first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on February 28. In 1910, an International Women's Conference was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the idea of an International Women's Day was proposed to promote equal rights and suffrage for women.

The first official International Women's Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Women and men rallied for women's rights to work, vote, and hold public office, and to end discrimination.

Since then, International Women's Day has been observed annually on March 8, to raise awareness about women's rights, celebrate women's achievements, and push for gender equality. It is a day to recognize the progress that has been made and the challenges that still exist for women around the world.

The theme for International Women's Day 2022 is "Choose to Challenge." This theme encourages individuals to challenge gender bias and inequality, and to choose to take action towards creating a more inclusive and gender-equal world. It highlights the importance of taking responsibility and actively engaging in the fight for gender equality, whether through small everyday actions or larger-scale initiatives. The "Choose to Challenge" theme also emphasizes the role of allyship and calls for individuals to stand up for women's rights and support gender equality.

International rights of women refer to the fundamental human rights that should be guaranteed to all women around the world. These rights include, but are not limited to:

  1. The right to life, liberty and security of person
  2. The right to education and equal opportunities for learning and employment
  3. The right to participate in politics and public life
  4. The right to marry and found a family, and to make decisions about reproductive health
  5. The right to be free from discrimination, violence and abuse
  6. The right to access healthcare and social services

International agreements and treaties such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, all recognize and promote the rights of women.

Despite these commitments, women in many parts of the world continue to face discrimination, violence, and unequal treatment. It is therefore important for governments and civil society organizations to work together to ensure that women's rights are protected and promoted, and that women are able to fully participate in all aspects of society.
