How I went from hardly any periods to having normal periods

my story

By Lena BaileyPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

So through out my period having life I never had a normal period like ever. I could possibly go a year with only having one or two periods. It would change sometimes but not much. I was told two different things as to why this was. One of them was that I was just not producing enough hormones to have a full blown period. That made sense to me because I know a lot of people who are heavier that don't produce a lot of hormones. I was always heavier my whole life.

So it got a little better in my 20s but not really. I got onto birth control when I was around 28 or 29. I hadn't had sex yet but I knew when I started having sex birth control would help cut down on unplanned pregnancies when condoms failed. When I first started on birth control I was on the generic planned parenthood offered. It was one with both hormones. I got my period almost right away. I stayed on that for a year then it got too expensive. Also I wanted to see if there were better options.

So I went on lemonade to get some birth control from them. It was very similar to the one from planned parenthood. I was told it was like the sister to that one. I didn't mind it so I was happy. So things stayed the same but at the end of that year they wouldn't treat me any more because I wasn't having steady periods.

I then went to NYRX (my spelling is maybe off). This one wasn't a hormone based birth control. My one complaint was that it was hard to swallow and it taste like Tylenol if you don't swallow it in time. Things didn't change much on this one. The amount of periods may have fluctuated but not much. So I stopped using this one because it got too expensive. I stayed off birth control for a while.

I don't know which birth control this was with but I think it was with NURX. I had a real period with one when I got drunk off wine. So I knew no matter what birth control I was on I could always get my period if I drank wine.

I finally decided to go back on birth control. This time I went with pill club. I've been happy with them ever since. They weren't hormonal pills. When I got on them I had the grosses period I ever had. The first day I bled through 5 over night pads and 2 tampons. It calmed down through out the next 6 to 7 days. I also started to use the reusable pads which hold more that the regular pads. I get more periods during the year sometimes I skip my periods.

I think I will stay on this one for the rest of my life. This one is called Isibloom. I thought about using other methods like IUDs but I heard horror stories about them. On the other pills that I was on I would have periods where I would spot for like a day or 2 and then it would stop. I may not have my period a few months but it's better than what I'm used to.

I wrote this to tell my story, not to tell anyone what to do. This may work for some, may not work for everyone. I'm happy where I am right now with birth control. Always talk to your doctor before you make these decisions for yourself.
