The event, organized by H.E. Alexey Paramonov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Italy and San Marino, was attended by esteemed members of the diplomatic corps, institutional representatives, and international colleagues. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Paramonov described Brito Sandoval as “a remarkable lady who needs no introduction; her energy and professionalism command great respect,” with the speech translated from Russian to Spanish by Minister Counselor Mikhail Rossinsky.

A Prestigious Recognition for a Legacy of Excellence

During the ceremony, H.E. Sonia Brito Sandoval was awarded the "For Cooperation" medal by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. This honor is reserved for individuals who have made substantial contributions to cultural exchange and dialogue between Russia and other nations.

In her acceptance speech, Ambassador Brito Sandoval expressed her heartfelt gratitude:

“Receiving this recognition is a profound honor. Art, music, culture, and the beauty of human creation are universal values that must be shared among the great global family.”

She further praised the internationalist solidarity shown by the Russian Federation, which has played a pivotal role in fostering cultural ties with Bolivia and other Latin American countries.

A Celebration of Cultural Collaboration: The Venice Biennale 2024

A highlight of this diplomatic and cultural collaboration was Bolivia's participation in the 2024 Venice Biennale, hosted in the prestigious Russian Pavilion. The exhibition, titled Qhip Nayra Uñtasis Sarnaqapxañani (“Looking to the Future-Past, We Move Forward”), explored themes rooted in indigenous heritage and the Andean worldview. The project featured 25 artists from Bolivia and across Latin America, focusing on indigenous philosophies such as "Vivir Bien" (Living Well), emphasizing harmony with nature and community.

The exhibition included remarkable contributions from notable artists such as Elvira Espejo Ayca, Director of the National Museum of Ethnography and Folklore in La Paz, whose textile art reflects ancestral knowledge, and Alexandra Bravo, whose feather art denounces the suffering of Latina migrant women in Europe. Emerging talents, like winners of the Eduardo Abaroa Prize 2022, also showcased innovative sculptures and textiles celebrating indigenous identity.

Reflecting on this collaboration, Ambassador Brito Sandoval stated:

“The Venice Biennale stands as an example of internationalist solidarity, where artists from diverse cultures are not seen as strangers but as part of one unified Mother Earth, Pachamama.”

This collaboration, supported by Russia, not only elevated Bolivia's visibility in contemporary art but also symbolized a vision of a borderless world. The Patria Grande concept, a central theme of the exhibition, emphasized unity among peoples liberated from colonialism through cultural self-determination.

A Farewell with Gratitude and Vision

As her tenure in Italy concluded, Ambassador Brito Sandoval expressed deep gratitude to the Russian people and government for their generosity and commitment to fostering cultural ties. She highlighted how art and culture serve as bridges between nations:

“The works and artists selected for the Biennale conveyed a message of unity and belonging, transcending cultural and linguistic barriers. This event exemplifies how art can promote universal connection and peace.”

Ambassador Paramonov lauded her as a distinguished diplomat and politician who consistently worked to create cultural and artistic connections between continents. The event also paved the way for enhanced political relations, including high-level meetings between the presidents of Russia and Bolivia.

A Legacy of Advocacy and Cultural Diplomacy

Throughout her diplomatic mission, Sonia Brito Sandoval demonstrated unwavering commitment to the defense of indigenous rights, women's empowerment, and cultural preservation. She spearheaded initiatives in sustainable fashion, intercultural education, and social advocacy, leaving an indelible mark on Bolivia’s diplomatic relations with Italy and beyond.

In her closing remarks, Brito Sandoval emphasized the need for continued collaboration in a multipolar world:

“This event represents how art transcends borders, fostering a sense of universal belonging. I hope that the friendship between Russia and Bolivia continues to thrive through future cultural initiatives.”

Returning to Bolivia, S.E. Sonia Brito Sandoval leaves behind a legacy of cultural diplomacy and an enduring vision of a world united by art, culture, and shared human values.
