Rise of the Woman: Mirkes, Okwaramoi lead talented bunch of Golden Eagles in Big East competition

Yes it is early, but we are kicking off the "Track & Field 2k22" season. The theme of the season is "Rise of the Woman." The meaning of the theme is that it is simply time. It is time for women's sports to have a serious space in the minds of sports fans. We are not comparing women's sports to men's sports. Women's sports are unique and show everyone that times are progressing and anything is possible.
Marquette finished sixth at the Big East Outdoor Track & Field Championships during the 2021 season. The Golden Eagles top returning sprinter is Rosalie Xavier who scored points for her school as a member of the 400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay squads at the conference championships. Both relay units placed fifth at the Big East outdoor meet. Xavier had the best open finish of her career at the Marquette Invitational when she placed second out of 11 competitors in the 200 meters at the Marquette Invitational.
Junior Kendall Pfrimmer also recorded a fifth place finish at the Big East meet but her result came in the 10,000 meters, where she ran a career best time of 35:31.57. The Rochester, Minnesota product was also the runner-up in the 10,000 meters at the Big Blue Classic.
Junior Juru Okwaramoi of Urbandale, Iowa returns as the top hurdler for Marquette. She was the conference runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a career best time of 1:01.10. Okwaramoi was a winner at the Marquette Invitational in the 400-meter hurdles. She proved to be a valuable athlete for Marquette contributing to fifth place finishes for the 400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay teams and a sixth place result in the 100-meter hurdles at the Big East Outdoor Track & Field Championships. At the Marquette Open, Okwaramoi won the 100-meter hurdles, 400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay.
Adalaide Havens, also a junior, shined in the 400-meter hurdles as well. She placed third at the Big East Outdoor Track & Field Championships preliminary round before placing eighth in the finals. At the 2021 Warrior Invitational she was a winner in the 400-meter hurdles.
Kate Jochims comes back to compete in 3,000 meters steeplechase action. She was sixth at the Big East Outdoor Track & Field Championships running a top career time of 10:36.31. She earned two steeplechase wins at the Illinois State Redbird Invitational and the Pacesetter Sports Invitational. Anna Penzkover placed eighth in the 3,000 meters steeplechase at the conference meet, where she ran a career best time of 11:37.26. Her first collegiate open win came at the 2021 Warrior Invitational.
Senior Lindsey Mirkes brought gold to Marquette by winning the high jump competition at the Big East meet. She jumped her all-time best mark of 1.80 at the conference championships. Mirkes collected high jump wins at the 2021 Warrior Invitational, Marquette Open and Marquette Invitational. She won her first Big East title during the 2020 indoor championship when she won the high jump event. She won the runner-up at the 2018 Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships and also at the outdoor conference meet during the same year.
Senior Brielle Buechler placed third at the conference championships in the pole vault competition. She was also third during the 2019 meet. Other athletes to watch for Marquette include Allie Flando who placed seventh in the hammer throw at last season's Big East meet. Katie Dingle and Mila Puseljic also placed fifth and sixth respectively in the Big East Heptathlon competition.
