Many personal records fall among NCAA's best
Top Performers of the Weekend
100 Meters
Above: Melissa Jefferson
Freshman Melissa Jefferson got a major win last weekend at the Gamecock Invitational, April 10. The Coastal Carolina sprinter ran a time of 11.27, which saw her finish ahead of All-American Kiara Grant of Norfolk State's time of 11.29. This was Grant's first outdoor meet of 2021. Her fastest career 100 meters performance is 11.04, which she ran in a sixth place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2019.
Jefferson has competed in two indoor seasons but is in the midst of her first collegiate outdoor season. In three outdoor meets, she has yet to lose an open race in either the 100 or 200 meters. Jefferson's finish over the weekend is the 12th best 100 meters time in the NCAA.

Tamara Clark of Alabama clocked in the best NCAA time of the season at 11.07 at the Crimson Tide Invitational, April 8. She inched ahead of USC's Twanisha Terry, who ran 11.08 six days earlier. Clark placed ahead of LSU's Mason Symone who's time of 11.21 was second in a field of 24 competitors. Clark once ran a time of 11.02 when she placed third at the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships back in 2018. Mason's time of 11.21 currently ranks sixth in the NCAA.

Tennessee's Maia McCoy recorded the ninth best time in the NCAA when she won the 100 meters at the Tennessee Relays on April 8. That was the senior's fastest time of her career. McCoy has recorded wins in the 100 meters in all of her three meets this season.
800 meters
Georgia's Amber Tanner ran the fourth fastest time in the NCAA in the 800 meter at the Spec Towns Invitational on April 9. The senior's time of 2:03.39 was a personal best as she and her teammate Anna Marian Block were the only runners in the field of 18 who finished under 2:10.

Tanner was the SEC indoor champ in the 800 meters during the 2020 season. She qualified for the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 800 meters.

A day before, Sarah Hendrick of Kennesaw State ran the second fastest time in the NCAA with a personal best finish of 2:01.47. At this year's Atlantic Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships, Hendrick won the 800 meters at 2:03.73.
Triple Jump
The NCAA's top triple jump marks were made over the weekend. Texas Tech's Ruth Usoro hit a mark of 14.50 which is number one in the NCAA. Her win at the Masked Rider Open, April 9, featured the best jump of her career.

At this year's NCAA indoor championship meet, Usoro was the triple jump champ after winning the Big 12 indoor crown. Prior to her days at Texas Tech she was a national champ and two-time runner-up on the junior college level at South Plains.

Georgia's Jasmine Moore has the second best mark in the NCAA. She jumped a personal best14.13 at the Spec Towns Invitational. She won the SEC indoor championship this year before placing fourth at the NCAA final.
3,000-meter Steeplechase
North Carolina State's Hannah Steelman rattled off the best finish in the NCAA's 3,000-meter steeplechase. She won the Tobacco Road Challenge in 9:46.35, April 9. In 2019, Steelman competed for Wofford, where she placed third in the steeplechase at the NCAA championship meet.

Track & Field 2k21: Tennessee Relays Saturday Recap
As we entered the second day of the Tennessee Relays, we thought that it would be a balance between the second and third day of events. Due to an expected rough day of weather on Sunday, many of that day's events were squeezed into Saturday's schedule. While the day went a little longer than expected, the University of Tennessee's athletic department and staff did as smooth as possible of a job in making things work. Here's a look at some of the news of Saturday's festivities.

Wild Card Weekend Recap: What Happens Now?
I think I figured out why I love Wild Card Weekend so much. It's because it's the first playoff anything of the calendar year. The NFL season starts in the fall, and once upon a time, the champion was crowned either on or slightly before New Year's. The evolution of the NFL schedule has resulted in the playoffs starting just into the New Year, and currently, the final week of the season falls on the first weekend of the New Year, with Wild Card Weekend coming a week after that. So yes, chronologically, the NFL's Wild Card Weekend serves as the first playoff anything of the calendar year.

Rule Changes in CFL Football
Wow, practically every governing body for every sport in the world has altered rules to make that sport better, faster, more exciting, etc. That is, with maybe the exception of soccer, which is so mired in what is thought of as necessary tradition that it will never move into the 21st century or beyond. Volleyball, badminton, baseball, hockey, NFL football, basketball, curling and so many more have all made changes to rules that served to improve the games for participants and officials but especially for spectators of the game. Even chess has evolved versions of its game to include speed chess (blitz chess) and matches including multiple opponents and combinations of the two and resulting in games lasting less than one minute.
