Versus Lakeland on October 23

No one hydroplanes the gymnasium floor Olivia Casabona, and Coach Rizzotti had the perfect words to describe the libero’s refusal to let the volleyball drop.
“We talk all the time about playing with want, playing with desire. But her actions on the court don’t speak that. They shout, I’m not going to let my team lose,” he boasted.
John Jay Track at Bowdoin

The most enthusiastic John Jay Cross Country runner ever is Luke Pinney, and the quote sounded even better when he sang it. “Hey, Hey, Hey, John Jay has a team, we make our coaches beam. On the way, we leave a trail of steam that makes our opponents scream. John Jay, John Jay, John Jay.”
John Jay Wrestling versus Pelham

JoJo Kern was confronted with an unusual strategy by his opponent. Yiorgos Georgas got the opening takedown for an early 3-0 and proceeded to let the Wolf up. A 3-1 score was soon 6-1 on Georgas’ second takedown, and despite another free escape, Kern wasn’t amused. “I don’t like when people underestimate me,” he assured.
The third time definitely wasn’t the charm, and Kern’s takedown closed the score to 6-5. The last laugh also went to the senior when Georgas was introduced to the ceiling on a third period pin. “The strategy didn’t work out so well,” Kern couldn’t help shooting back.
John Jay Boys Basketball versus Yonkers

Even for the John Jay faithful, it can be difficult to keep track of which Rickel twin is which. So you can only imagine how opponents feel and Will Rickel gave voice to the challenge. “When we sub in and out, they don’t know who’s coming at them,” Will joked.
John Jay Wrestling Versus Peekskill

James Dachik found himself in a heavyweight tussle versus his Peekskill opponent. James took a 3-0 lead on a third period throw, and back on their feet, both wrestlers tried to elevate the other. Topsy-turvy, Dachik admitted it didn’t look pretty. But he remained with the upper hand in victory and had the words to sum it up. “I messed it up, but he messed it up worse,” Dachik joked.
John Girls Basketball Versus Somers

When it comes to rebounding, Jaime Bartley-Cohen doesn’t mess around. With a fierce face for every contested rebound, there’s no stopping her. Of course, her modest description doesn’t do justice. “I’m an aggressive rebounder.”
An understatement that had Coach Gallagher painting the real image, and he only needed one word to put it on the canvas. “Nasty,” he clarified with pride.
At the Wrestling Sections

Ryker McCarty had no problem admitting how much his triple overtime consolation match took out of him. “I was tired,” McCarthy assured.
Not so bad - especially when the final score revealed the only thing that mattered. “I think he was more tired,” the bronze medalist dropped the mic.
John Jay Tennis Versus Greeley

Andrew Marchini has a very succinct, straightforward discourse that lays out the facts and never fails to amuse. After a 6-2, 6-3 loss at Greeley, he lived up to his reputation. “Don’t do what I did and do what he did,” he was right on point.
John Jay Tennis Versus Greeley

And he’s not the only comedian on the tennis team. After a 6-3, 6-3 loss, Chaz Thea easily explains the problem. “They cheated.”
Of course, the senior was only kidding and didn’t stop there. “Maybe I need to be more serious,” he posed.
And then the tennis player knocked it out of the park. “No, that’s crazy.”
Sounds like the kid can’t lose no matter the score.
John Jay Softball Versus Somers

With crosstown bragging rights at stake, Maria DeGaetano needed three more outs in a one run game. Coach DelMore wasn’t worried. “No matter how big the situation is, she is as cool as the other side of the pillow,” said DelMoro, and the pitcher made good with a 2-1 victory.
John Jay Baseball Versus Greeley

With the bases loaded, Steve Carozo stepped up to the plate with his coach’s directive in his head. “Coach said we’re not swinging at the first pitch,” he conveyed, “we want to run up the pitch count.”
But a meatball right down the middle had the catcher take a detour. "I had to jump on it,” said the senior.
Two runs in, Coach Lawrence still had his say. “He walked over, and the first thing he said was, ‘what happened to take the first pitch’” Carozo relayed the humor, and everyone got the joke.
John Jay Baseball v Harrison

More a moment and an image than a quote...A two out jam got the better of Jacob Storch and resulted in a bit of an outburst by the junior. So Coach Lawrence sent out a quick verbal directive. “We’ll just say a couple of words and let him cool down,” said the manager. “He knows how to do it.”
The subsequent strikeout proved the point, and Lawrence was the first to greet his pitcher. He threw his arms around Storch’s shoulder as if to say, “you had it all the way,” and the smiles went in both directions.
