Top 3 Motivational Sport Movies

Feel good movies to watch when you're down

By Hannah ElliottPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

Every now and then, you need a feel-good movie, a movie to watch when you are down to motivate you and make whatever you are going through feel a little but better. I am also not sure why but it seems that so many great motivational movies are sport related. Could be the element of the underdog story is always one that makes you feel better, like you could do anything. My top three are the following:

1. Remember the Titans

This is a classic feel good movie and you cannot tell me otherwise. This movie is all about the integration of race. To sum it all up, an all black school and an all white school were being forced to combine, and at this time in the US this was not okay at all. Now with the school being combined it also means that the football team was as well, they even named Coach Boon as the head coach, having a black head coach replace a white head coach. Not everyone was a fan of it. This movie shows the progress the boys on the football team make, not only in looking past each others’ differences but having the entire city look past the colour of one’s skin. The team shows us all that you can get past physical differences to allow new connections to be made, new friends, and new success as they go on to be undefeated for the entire season. They go through a ton of hardships to get them to where they were, and they overcame those making this movie on of the best motivational movies there are.

2. Blindside

This movie is truly motivational. The fact as well that it is based on a true story as well is amazing, I found. After the movie, I even looked up Michael Oher's history and the movie really followed his story close. The summary of this movie is that a young boy who grows up in the poorest of poor neighbourhoods is struggling to survive and make it in school. He is taken in by a wealthy family who helps him discover his love of football. They really help change his life around, and he is recruited by tons of colleges for football since he is huge, and great for the offensive line. It is a really touching storyline to think about. He goes through a lot without a doubt, I could not imagine being in his shoes. One of the most touching moments I think is when the mom is showing Michael his room; he says that he’s never had one before and the mom thinks that he means a room to himself, but he really means a bed.

3. Coach Carter

This movie was motivational was because it is the true underdog story. This coach takes the worst school in the city, takes the worst students who are also the basketball team, using team as a loose term; and turns them into a great team. Coach Carter shows this team that just because they are at one of the worst schools in the district, it does not mean that they must fall into the same social grouping they were placed in. That they can be more than they thought, be able to go to college and get out of the area; not having to fall into the gangs and need to sell drugs to survive. It probably has one of the most quotable speeches, which is the “Our deepest fears,” speech. The way that Coach was able to turn the team around, but make it that playing basketball meant nothing unless they were able to go somewhere with it, is truly motivating for everyone, really.
