Stating the Obvious: The Colorado Rockies SUCK!
A look at the disastrous start to the Colorado Rockies' 2025 season

Seriously, what in blue blazes happened to this team?!
On Saturday, May 10, 2025, while I was watching some Stanley Cup and NBA playoff action, I noticed something very alarming on the MLB scoreboard. The San Diego Padres were winning 20-0 over the Colorado Rockies... in the sixth inning! The sixth inning! And here I thought the Chargers moved out of San Diego. They did end up getting the extra point. The Rockies lost 21-0. At home.
The Rockies dropped to 6-33 with that embarrassing loss, a win percentage of .153. As of now, they are on pace to finish with just 25 wins this season. They're on the road to making last year's White Sox team look like the 2001 Seattle Mariners. The Rockies never really had a good history; they debuted along with the Florida Marlins in 1993, and it only took their third season to reach the postseason for the first time, doing so as the first-ever Wild Card in the National League. However, it would be 12 years until the Rockies reached the postseason again, and we all how that started.

2007. The dream year. The Rockies went on a winning tear that drew them into a tie with the Padres for the National League's lone Wild Card spot. Rockies won in extra innings to advance, and the tear continued. Swept the Phillies in the NLDS. Swept the Diamondbacks in the NLCS. The Rockies, in their 15th season, were in the World Series for the first time in franchise history. Yes, folks, the Rockies have a pennant, but the Mariners don't. The Rockies were swept by the Boston Red Sox, but still, this was a dream year for the Rockies.
They haven't come close to that since. Only three postseason appearances since then, the last one in 2018. Other than the embarrassing blowout, Colorado's 2018 season inspired me to write this, because the 2018 season ended with Colorado being part of history and being on the verge of making more history. On October 1, 2018, the Rockies entered that day tied for first place in the NL West with the Dodgers. Game 163 was played between those two teams. It was one of two Game 163s played that day, the first and only time that two tiebreaker games were played (the other one was between the Brewers and Cubs for the NL Central). And with MLB abolishing tiebreaker games in 2022, this day marked the final time we would see the extra game played.
So the Rockies were part of history that day, and they actually had a chance to do something they had never done: win the division. The Rockies lost that game, 5-2, but they were still good enough to qualify for the postseason that year. They defeated a declining Cubs team in the NL Wild Card Game, but the NLDS saw them owned by the Brewers. The Rockies haven't come close to the postseason since then. Their best season since then was a 74-87 campaign in 2021.
So let's talk more about this disaster known as the 2025 season.

The Rockies are hitting .215 as a team. Only the White Sox are worse. The Rockies have 124 total runs; barely over three runs a game. Only the Pirates have fewer runs, but not by much. Regarding home runs, the Rockies have a grand total of 32 home runs this season, which is tied with the Astros and Rays. Four teams have less than that--surprisingly, the Royals are one of them. So who's the hitting leader in this sinking ship? None other than catcher Hunter Goodman. Goodman's leading in all offensive categories except for home runs. Jordan Beck leads the team in home runs with six.
The Rockies are on an eight-game losing streak for the third time this season. Yikes. Yet despite this, they have won back-to-back games this year; beating the Braves on April 30 and the Giants on May 1. I'm wondering if the Colorado Rockies name is cursed. We hockey fans know the Colorado Rockies as a terrible team who moved from to Denver after playing their first two seasons as the Kansas City Scouts, having terrible seasons but being most remembered for receiving legendary player Lanny McDonald in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The NHL Rockies moved to New Jersey in 1982 and became the Devils, and had a lot success afterwards, winning three Stanley Cups in 1995, 2000, and 2003.
As for baseball's Rockies, well, I don't know what this team needs. Relocation? A miracle? An exorcist? Amazing how every sports market has that one "black sheep" team. Colorado has the Avalanche and Nuggets leading the way, the Broncos made the playoffs last season and have some promise with Bo Nix, but then there's the Rockies serving as the second-biggest disgrace to the state (Lauren Boebert will ALWAYS be Colorado's biggest mistake). This team is a horrible mess, and it could be years, maybe at least a decade, until they get out of whatever funk they're in.

Sad but how wiil they ever be able to attract quality pitching? The revenue inspired revisions to the MLB continue to stack against pitchers, So regardless of how much offense they may produce at home, they still play 81 games on the road. And if you're not bringing quality pitching they're not going to win? When is the last time they signed a great free agent pitcher? Mike Hampton? He went there because he loved hitting. The team ERA for the history of the franchise is over 5.0. Just don't see how they'll ever be relevant unless maybe they build a domed stadium where they can control the impact of altitude, if that's even possible.
