On Wednesday October 15, the Somers-Yorktown swim team gathered at the Mildred E Strang Middle School in Yorktown and were joined in the pool by John Jay. The times going to the visiting team by a score of 54-40, Yorktown-Somers still put up some good numbers, and the strong showing began for Ansley Edelmann.
She won the 200 Individual Medley (2:23.70), the 100 Fly (1:02.96) and was part of the 200 Meter Freestyle winning Relay with Katie Kurth, Ava Burch and Makayla Pettigrew.
Alongside Makayla Pettigre, Paige Edelmann and Katie Kurth, Edelmann also took second in the 400 Freestyle Meter Relay, but the swimmer had no problem signifying her favorite. “I like the 100 Meter Fly,” she assured.
Edelmann has good reason too. “I’m really close to the school record,” she revealed with pride
Half a second off the pace, she plans to go above and beyond her varsity and club practice regimen to rewrite the school history books. “With a lot of additional training," said Edelmann, “I think if I go in fresh, I’ll be able to achieve my goal.”
Up next on the docket, Katie Kurth took the 200 Meter Freestyle (2:06.55) but really reveled in her second place finish in the 100 Meter Backstroke (1:05.02). “It’s all about the speed,” said Kurth. “You’re always racing. You don’t have time to glide, and I like that part a lot.”
The only slow down involves the blind turn against the wall. “We all have to know how many strokes to take before we split,” said Kurth. “We train for that every day, so you make sure you have it down for each and every racs.”
Makenna Geraghty feels the same way about the 100 Meter Butterfly. “I like it because there’s no room to pace yourself,” she said. “You go really fast all the time, and I like going fast.”
The 100 Meter Fly had Olivia Sun sprinting too. “It’s one of my best events,” she said after her second place finish (1:07.69).
Sun was also part of the second place finish in the 200 Meter Medley Relay with Annie Abulencia, Ava Burch and Paige Edelmann. On the flip side, she had a longer view in terms of the team. “We always cheer each other up, give pep talks and provide plenty of high fives,” said Sun.
Of course, Somers and Yorktown aren’t supposed to get along. However, these girls missed the crosstown rivalry memo. “We have a treaty,” joked Kara DeVito.
Out of her comfort zone and giving the breast stroke a try on this day, DeVito’s humor perfectly dovetailed with Kurth’s straight forward estimation of the team. “We are a super close family. We hangout before, we hangout in the pool, and we’re always together,” she concluded.
In addition, Ingrid Mealli took third in the 200 Meter IM and the100 meter backstroke, Annie Abulencia placed third in the 50 meter, Ava Burch finished third in the 100 meter and second in the 100 Meter Breaststroke and Annie Abulencia bronzed in the 500 meter marathon.
