On October 18, Somers stayed home on Friday night, and Logan Ruby helped his teammates quickly put their feet up on a play the defense was practicing all week. “Right before, I called it out, because I knew exactly what they were going to do,” said the corner back,” and the forewarning set the table for the rest of the game.

“I saw the ball go, threw my hands up, pulled it off and then took it to the end zone,” Ruby said of the opening series pick six that led the way for victory.

Of course, a dropped first down pass didn’t help matters for Brewster, and when Kenneth Dillon floated a balloon to the right, the Tusker was there with the pin. “It was amazing,” he said of the 25 yard touchdown at 11:38.

Try again, Chase Prohaszka didn’t miss a beat and ran 14 yards on first down this time. So the defense got back on the clock and a Bret Kennedy led herd had Dillon running for his life on third down. A frantic scramble, the QB traded a heave out of bounds for the chance to live another day.

As it turned out, the Brewster defense quickly had Dillon resuscitated. Somers was punting three plays later, and the Bears were back at it from the 16.

No problem, the Tusker defense returned the favor, and Brewster obliged by doing one. Actually two better, the snap sailed high on the punt and Somers had a safety 7:18.

An 8-0 game, the Brewster defense still wasn’t bothered. Five yards on four plays and the ball was turned over at the Brewster 40.

The defense did not rest for Somers either. On second and ten, Ryan Brush broke up a Dillon beeline over the middle, and a play later, Brewster was in punt formation again.

Only landing 15 yards ahead, the offense did finally get airborne. First, Mason Kelly and Miguel Iglesias engaged the engines by getting Somers across midfield for a third and three, and then Jackson Whipple’s reception across the middle gave his team a lift to the 35.

He did put the landing gear down by fumbling, though, but Tristen Iglesias recovered for a first down at the 27. Three plays later, Somers was in the end zone, but a hold negated the Dean Palazzolo score.

Undeterred, a Cam Violante reception gave Somers the ball on the three but Brewster stood tall. Two runs went nowhere and the Bears ran off the field with a goal line stand.

So Somers simply switched gears into the field position game, and soon had the ball back 35 yards away. One play, Kelly ran left, and Somers led 15-0 with 9:24 left in the half.

Now it was the Brewster offense that refused to be bogged down. They did initially get some help. A short sideline completion to Marco Parrello didn’t look like much until a personal foul moved the ball to the 50.

But Brewster did the rest by themselves. Dillon connected with Vincent Ficarra for 25, Harrison Schmitt for ten more, and Ryan Brace for the touchdown at 6:41.

A game it seemed, Somers accepted the wake up call instead. An Iglesias scramble freed Tristan Iglesias for a 12 yard reception that bypassed the snooze button, and on the next play, Iglesias and Whipple officially got the boys out of bed.

The QB dropped back, and the perfect pass into a well defended Whipple had Ruby enjoying the show from the sideline. “That play looked really cool and gave us a lot of momentum,” assured the senior.

A 35 yard gain to the 15, the ground game did the rest. Palazzolo came around to the left for eight yards and then Kelly shook off a defender to set up a first down at the one. Two plays later, the back was in, and Somers led 21-7.

3:30 left in the half, Brewster initially kept coming. Dillon hit Prohaszka for five and then zipped a bullet over the middle to Ficarra.

Add 15 for another personal foul and concern could have taken over. Nope, Brewster gave back and a hold unraveled the drive.

A 12 yard punt only added fuel, and Iglesias and Palazzolo lit the match from the Somers 42. Dropping back, Iglesias threw into double coverage, and the number one receiver out jumped both Bears for a first down at the Brewster 30.

Sixty-eight seconds remaining, the duo did it. A quick reception to the 11 and Kelly went solo from there with the touchdown run.

Onto the third quarter, Somers was primed to pour it on, but a tipped Iglesias pass gave the visitors the ball. At 30, the defense may just have had Brewster exactly where they wanted them. “The guard and tackle didn’t know what was coming,” said Chris Decker, and his big third and five sack clarified any uncertainty.

A fourth down incompletion returned the ball, and down the field again, a 30 yard reverse to Palazzolo meant seven more and essentially kept the record unblemished.
