When Antonio Accurso picked off Tristan Iglesias with 4:43 left in the first half, it was the third stop Brewster put on Somers in a 7-0 game. “They came out strong,” said RJ Peterson. So a spark was needed, and the bolt came out of the backfield.

“Nate (Mitchell) can run through anything,” said Peterson. And his 51 yard run set up Gavin Kelly’s 12 yard touchdown reception, which put Somers on the way to a 30-0 home victory.

Senior night, the celebration carried over. The defense sent the Bears into hibernation after only three plays, and offense got started at the Brewster 48. A screen left later to Dean Palazzolo and the Tuskers were 28 yards away.

But the next two plays went nowhere so Somers went to its fallback. “He’s our go to guy,” said Peterson, and Iglesias dropped a 26 yard touchdown pass to Palazzolo.

7-0 after the Gavin Kelly extra point, the game seemed exactly on point when the defense returned to the field. Three plays and Palazzolo had his team across midfield on the punt return.

A pair of first downs was not good enough, though. Iglesias’ loft to Palazzolo in the end zone was well covered, and Somers gave the ball up on downs.

Still, Brewster had no answers for the Somers defense. They punted again after three plays, and worse yet, Palazzolo was able to run down the angled kick.

Resulting in a first down at the Brewster 39, Somers remained on the move. Jackson Whipple received on the sideline to the 12, and Iglesias set the Tuskers up at the six with a keeper.

Not there yet, Brewster dug in. “They are big up front,” said Hudson Ruby, and fourth and one had the Bears winning the brunt.

Backed up, the Brewster offense finally spoke up. Chase Prohaszka completed a pass to the 26 and then ran a keeper to the 37.

So the elephants put their feet down. Ben Brenninkmeyer and Jackson Whipple had tackles, and the Tuskers took over again.

Not for long, Iglesias got picked off on the sideline at 4:43, and the Brewster offense hoped to take the cue. Same story, their defense was back on the field only 90 seconds later.

They were rudely awakened by Mitchell on first down too. “He runs big,” said Peterson after the explosion to the Brewster 24.

He went even bigger on second and six. Stopped at the line, the full back refused to go down, and Somers had a first down at the 12.

A breather earned, the airways did the rest. Iglesias hit Gavin Kelly on the sideline for the touchdown, and the field goal kicker gave full credit to the read from the sideline. “It was a great call by the coaches,” he said. “The way they were lining up against us, that route was perfect.”

Clanging the crossbar didn’t dampen the mood going into the locker room, and the time was well spent. “We made some changes,” said Hudson Ruby, “and came out with more juice.”

A delayed reaction, the Somers offense did take until their second possession to apply the game plan. But first they got an assist from the defense. “The pressure came home,” said Whipple,” and I was in the right place, at the right time.”

His interception set Somers up at the 36, and it was go to time again. Palazzolo over the middle and with a step, Iglesias held up his end, which was no surprise to Kelly. “He’s an automatic,” boasted the receiver.

Another big catch by Palazzolo set up the fourth touchdown, and with the season nearing its end, Kelly reiterated the goal. “A sectional championship,” he concluded, “that’s always been the goal, and we want to follow through.”
