On Thursday September 18, Somers hosted White Plains at the high school, and with two minutes left in the first half, the goal tally was still stuck at number zero. The offensive time of possession was completely another matter and foretold the one sided outcome for the visitors.
Play mostly remaining in the Somers side of the field, White Plains scored two quick goals in the final moments of the half and then went onto an easy 5-0 victory.
The game began with White Plains putting a shot on goal and seconds later the Tigers were lining up for a penalty corner shot. Caitlyn Mayfield put the first stop on goal, and after Alivia DiGiacomo battled for the ball, Jessica Bowden got the clear for her team.
Up the field, a familiar pattern emerged after each defensive stand. Somers could not transition, and White Plains would come right back to town. Still, Mayfield and Bowden kept battling for possession, and the scoreboard stalemate moved to the second period.
There, White Plains remained on point. Alexis Tighe swiped a backhand shot into the box at 13:40, and Adrianna Mancuso turned a steal on the sideline to a non stop to the goal line. The shot went wide at five minutes, but on the inbound, Brooke Thomas almost snuck one in on a lateral push on the goal line.
Two minutes later on the spectator sideline of the field, Tighe hit Thomas out front, and White Plains had a 1-0 lead in the final minute. Plenty of time, Micalyn Kelly did almost the same number with Tighe, and the forward sent her team into intermission with a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Back on the field, Tighe swiped a second straight goal at 10:59, and White Plains continued to control the offensive zone. Two more goals to come, White Plains went home without a struggle.
Somers Field Hockey Looking to Grow
By Rich Monetti
Last year, Somers went 6-10-2 in Shannon Scavelli's first year as head coach and faced John Jay in the first round of the sections. “We did ok,” she said of the first round loss. So either way for 2025, the goal is to keep pointing the right direction.
“Our hope is to keep growing, have fun and win the games that we should win,” said Coach Scavelli.
In the middle of the field, Jessica Bowden is returning as senior captain, and Caitlyn Mayfield will be at her side as a junior middie. “Caitlyn and Jessica are players that can really keep up the whole game,” said the coach.
Up the field , Emma Donaldson and Ella Jacobs are among the many Tuskers who can go on attack and drop back in diversity. “We have a lot of people who can play multiple positions,” said Scavelli proudly
Back the other way, Vivian Davila anchors the defense attack. “She’s going to hold it down,” said the coach. “She played every single game last year.”
Experience comes to town in goal too. “We got two great goalies that are ready to play,” said Scavelli of senior Mary Jarrett and junior Amy Kovacs.
Communication the key factor, the conversation extends past the field and points toward success. “They’re all good friends off the field and that makes a huge difference,” she concluded.
