Redball Express wins the district against overachieving Brush
Behind Steve Bowie's 27 points, Shaw (19-3) inched past Brush 92-90 to win the district championship in front of a packed house at Euclid High School.
With an 88-76 lead at the 1:25 mark, Shaw looked as if it would cruise to a win, "They made a run at us like Jaws," said Shaw head coach Leon Hines.
Brush finished its season at 19-3. Shaw got 26 points from guard Rashad Goggins. Known as the Redball Express, Shaw also got double-doubles from frontcourt players Calvin Brown (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Basra Fakhir (14 points, 11 rebounds).

Raina Hill signs to Howard
After a drought in girls basketball success during the early to mid-1990s, center Raina Hill showed up and helped revive the once dominant program. In doing so she and her teammates led Shaw to its only back-to-back winning seasons of the decade. On May 30, 1998 it was reported that Hill accepted an offer to play basketball at NCAA Division I program, Howard University.

Shaw boys win first league championship in 47 years
"We don't even have a place to train," coach Scott Gay told the press after Shaw became Lake Erie League champions. Without a home track and the lack of area schools willing to share their facilities, Shaw found a way to win.
Olondo Walker guided Shaw to a high jump win, while Lamar Cooper, Charles Hemphill, Michale Johnson and Johnathan Green won the 3,200-meter relay. Perhaps the most interesting story on this team was an athlete by the name of Mark Lattimore.
Legend has it that Lattimore had never competed in track and field before the season and had very little training before he showed up and won the league championship in the 100-meter dash.
"We spend a couple of days in the pool and a couple of days running behind Shaw on Sheldon Road," Gay said.
"It's hard on the kids, but no matter what we have to do, or how late we have to practice, the guys are there."
Located in East Cleveland, Ohio, Shaw High School has one of the most long lasting but underappreciated sports histories in all of the United States.
From being the only school in the state of Ohio to have a stadium that hosted actual NFL games to all of the athletes from the 1800's to the present that have gone on to lead productive lives and make history along the way, Shaw sports has a decorated past that most schools could only wish to own.
We invite you to enjoy this continuing series that will introduce you to some of the greatest athletes to ever call themselves Shaw Cardinals. Feel free to join the Shaw Cardinals Sports Group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/810810319312653/
