Navdeep Singh Wins Historic Gold at Paris 2024 Paralympics in Javelin Throw
Navdeep Singh's Golden Triumph: A Record-Breaking Performance at the Paris 2024 Paralympics

India’s presence at the global sports stage continues to grow stronger, and a new chapter has been added to the country's sporting history, thanks to Navdeep Singh. At the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Navdeep secured a remarkable gold medal in the men’s javelin throw F41 class with a record-breaking performance that has made the entire nation proud.
On a Saturday full of anticipation and excitement, Navdeep achieved a stunning throw of 47.32 meters, which set a new Paralympic record in the F41 javelin throw class. This was not only a personal triumph for Navdeep but also a historic moment for India, as it marked the country's first-ever medal in this specific category at the Paralympic Games.
A Record-Breaking Performance
Navdeep’s medal-winning throw of 47.32 meters shattered the previous Paralympic record of 47.13 meters, which was set by Sun Pengxiang of the People’s Republic of China during the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. This new record was a testament to Navdeep’s hard work, perseverance, and dedication.
But the competition wasn’t without its tense moments. Sadegh Beit Sayah from the Islamic Republic of Iran managed to temporarily snatch the lead from Navdeep with a throw of 47.64 meters in his second-to-last attempt. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Sadegh was later disqualified due to a breach of rules involving unsporting or improper conduct. This disqualification meant that Navdeep’s record-breaking throw was enough to secure him the gold medal.
Navdeep’s Journey to the Top
Navdeep, who is a southpaw (left-handed), admitted that he didn’t expect to throw as far as he did. He mentioned in a post-event interview, “I didn't expect to throw that far, to be honest. My target was a bit less than that, but I was hoping to do well and had faith in my coach. I am delighted it went well.”
His first throw of the competition was a foul, which could have easily dampened his spirits. However, Navdeep’s coach reassured him, telling him that the foul throw was still a good attempt and to keep pushing forward. Motivated by his coach’s confidence, Navdeep managed to improve on his subsequent throws, with two of them measuring over 45 meters. Despite being overtaken momentarily by Sadegh, Navdeep held his ground and emerged victorious.
He shared, “My first throw was a foul, but my coach told me it was a good throw. So, I tried bettering the distance in my next throws. Two of my other throws measured over 45 meters. I expect to do better than that in the future."
Though he had two more attempts to improve his record after Sadegh’s throw, Navdeep couldn’t surpass the Iranian’s distance. But when Sadegh was disqualified, Navdeep’s outstanding throw stood as the best in the competition, cementing his place at the top of the podium.
The Podium and Other Competitors
While Navdeep claimed the gold, the competition was fierce. Sun Pengxiang, the defending Paralympic champion from China, secured the silver medal with his best throw of 44.72 meters. Sun was a formidable opponent, having also won the gold at the World Para Athletics earlier in 2024.
The bronze medal went to Wildan Nukhailawi from Iraq, who managed a best throw of 40.46 meters. These talented athletes showcased incredible skill and determination in the javelin event, but it was Navdeep’s day to shine.
Overcoming Past Disappointments
Navdeep’s victory in Paris is even more special when you consider the challenges he has faced over the years. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Navdeep narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth in the javelin throw. This was a heartbreaking result for the young athlete, but it only fueled his determination to succeed.
The same scenario played out at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, where he once again finished fourth, just shy of a medal. These near-misses would have been discouraging for many, but for Navdeep, they were stepping stones to greater achievements.
Reflecting on his victory, Navdeep said, “This medal holds a lot of importance in my life. I have attained a Paralympic Games podium finish after years of waiting and hard work. I placed fourth at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. At the Hangzhou Asian Games, too, I took fourth place. A podium finish has arrived at long last. Joy has arrived at long last."
Indeed, Navdeep’s persistence and refusal to give up have finally paid off. After years of effort, he now stands at the pinnacle of Paralympic success.
A Year of Achievements
Navdeep’s success at Paris 2024 is not his only achievement this year. In 2024, he also won a bronze medal at the World Para Athletics, showcasing his consistency and talent on the global stage. His steady improvement and dedication have made him one of India’s brightest stars in para athletics.
A Milestone for India
Navdeep’s gold medal is India’s 29th medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics and the 17th medal in para athletics. This achievement reflects India’s growing strength and presence in the Paralympic Games. Indian athletes have been performing exceptionally well across various disciplines, bringing home medals and breaking records.
The javelin throw, in particular, has been a successful event for India at these Paralympics. In addition to Navdeep’s gold, Sumit Antil also won a gold medal in the F64 javelin throw class. Moreover, Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar added to India’s medal tally by winning silver and bronze, respectively, in the F46 class. These victories demonstrate India’s prowess in para javelin throw and its continued rise in global para athletics.
A Bright Future Ahead
Navdeep Singh’s historic win at the Paris 2024 Paralympics is a testament to his talent, hard work, and determination. His journey from narrowly missing the podium to breaking a Paralympic record and winning gold serves as an inspiration to athletes everywhere.
At just 23 years old, Navdeep’s future in the sport looks incredibly promising. With his first Paralympic gold under his belt and years of competitive experience ahead of him, Navdeep is sure to continue making India proud on the international stage.
As Navdeep himself said, “Everyone dreams of doing well on such a big stage. My efforts have borne fruit today.” His dream has come true, and in the process, he has inspired millions of people in India and beyond.
Navdeep Singh’s story is a reminder that persistence and belief in oneself can lead to greatness, even after setbacks. His record-breaking throw in Paris is a moment that will be remembered for years to come, not just in India but across the world of para athletics.
