The Colorado Avalanche visit Canada's capital to face off against the red hot Ottawa Senators

By Clyde E. DawkinsPublished 10 months ago 3 min read

It was a heartbreaking night in Toronto for the Colorado Avalanche, but we could not look back on that for too long. That game is the first of a back-to-back set for the Avs, and we had to get right back to work, as we were off to Canada's capital to face off against the Ottawa Senators, another red hot team. The Senators are looking very good, it's very likely that this team will be in the playoffs for the first time since missing the Stanley Cup Final by a hair in 2017. Of course, we all know the story with the Sens, that certain trade that basically ruined them.

And here comes the team who destroyed the Sens with that trade.

Scott Wedgewood was in net against Linus Ullmark. Oh boy! Crazy thing, Sens led in shots 5-0, and the first half of the period was quiet. Then the second half happened. First off, Nathan MacKinnon (who else?) at 10:29 from Jonathan Drouin and Cale Makar. 59 seconds later, Brock Nelson finally get his first goal with the Avs, so that makes it 2-0! Avs went on the power play, and that led to Makar making it 3-0 just like that! Avs scored three goals on three shots. Holy moley! Three minutes later, Joel Kiviranta made it 4-0, and that was it for Ullmark, his night was done. I tried to tell people that Ullmark was overrated and not good, but no one listened to me.

Anyway, it was Anton Forsberg the rest of the way, and the Avs received another power play with six seconds left in the period. In the second period, it was Nelson again, making it 5-0! So yeah, this game was done. Well, actually, it was done when it was 4-0 in the first period. All that was left was to hope for a shutout, which Wedgewood was good at; he had been shutting down teams a lot this season. The 5-0 score held up after two periods, and in the third, Ottawa finally had power play opportunities. They did finally get on the board, and it was Dylan Cozens who hatched the goose egg. I wasn't that bummed, hell, 5-1 is still good. Plus, I was happy that it was Cozens who scored the goal because he suffered with being with the Sabres for a good bit, and that Sabres team is a lost cause. The fact that Cozens has a chance at playoffs with Ottawa, of all teams, proves it.

A big win for the Avs, and the centerpiece has to be Brock Nelson. A lot of Avs fans were getting impatient when it came to Nelson, who we traded for on March 6. His first Avs point came in his first Avs game on March 8, but it was an assist; the goals hadn't come for Nelson yet. Some fans were starting to call the deal a bust. I was being patient. It will come. It almost did in Minnesota. It came in spades in Ottawa. A pair of goals, one of them on the power play. MacKinnon added to his league leading total, and Makar had a multi-point game, giving him 81 this season. He's getting 100. He has 12 games left to get 19 points. He'll get there.

Regarding the big picture, the Avs are three points behind the Dallas Stars for second place in the Central, picking up a point after the Stars lost via shootout. The Avs' Eastern Canadian trip will end on Saturday in Montreal, and after that, it's a four game homestand to end the month of March. Another good chance to possibly pass Dallas in the standings!
