On Saturday June 21, the Lewisboro Lightning (12U) faced the 9ers at Lewisboro Town Park, and the bats had a pretty easy time of it. But the tone of the 11-1 mercy offering was set by the defense in the early going.

With runners on second and third and no one out, a ground ball to third set a play in motion that often doesn’t have baseball 101 applying at this level. So the runner taking off, Nate Tubbs stayed in school. He fired home for the out, broke the 9er rally and cued up the bats in the bottom of the second

Hugo Samanich first, he singled to right, stole second and reached third on Mac Sullivan’s grounder to third. A high throw to first, runners were on the corners with no outs.

Contacted needed, Maxim Wredberg followed the curriculum too. “You don’t want to hit it weak,” he explained, “hit it hard to at least have a chance to bring in the runners.”

A sacrifice fly to right made good on the words, and at 1-0, Chase Vosler stayed in the vicinity with a bloop single to right. “I was expecting to hit it better, but I still brought the run in,” he said.

Two stolen bases later, Vosler was at third and Ryan Dunn wasn’t finished. He singled to center, and the lead was three.

Onto the third, Vosler took the mound after Sullivan and Samanich threw doughnuts. A change up that was by design and wasn’t limited to the pitching. “We play a bunch of different positions in practice,” revealed Wredberg. “So we’re prepared, and everyone is capable.”

A strike out and a pair of ground balls moved the game to the bottom of the third, where the Lewisboro bats remained status quo. CJ Mammoser singled to center, Scott did the same to left, and when Tubbs stepped in, guessing wrong still kept the third baseman in stride. “I was sitting on off speed, but he gave me a fastball,” Tubbs clarified. “I adjusted, and I hit the ball in the middle for a double.”

Another run came in on a ground out to third by Saminich, and Lewisboro needed nine more outs. Still, the 9ers tried not to keep count. A single and two walks loaded the bases, and Gary Giogobrani got the 9ers on the board with a single.

A single run was all, though. Vosler stabbed Jeremy Persen’s line drive back at him, and a base running error ended the inning.

The Lightning went quietly in the fourth, so Vosler stuck to the game plan. “I just needed to throw strikes and take my time,” said the reliever.

Two strikeouts and a ground out provided the proof, and the fifth was set up to put the 9ers out of their misery. After Mammoser reached on an error, Scott was definitely not thrown by taking over the catching duties.

This especially with the courtesy he received with the bat in his hands. “The pitch was right down the middle,” Scott beamed, and a run scoring triple was the result.

Around a single by Samanich, Tubbs and Samanich walked, and the rally put Wredberg in position to put the ball in play again. His ground ball to second pushed a run across, and Dunn stepped in with the right mindset too.

Grounding to short, the game came full circle. The throw went to first, a ten run advantage came home, and the Lightning moved to 4-1 on the season.
