Sober driving is the only rational way to drive on the roadways. NBA two-time champion Lamar Odom was picked up for driving under the influence, violating lane changing protocol, and for not maintaining his vehicle in his own lane.

After over a decade since his last arrest for drunk driving, Odom has had a rocky go at it. Cops arrested him in 2013. A few years later, authorities discovered him barely hanging onto life where he experienced multiple strokes and heart attacks leading up to a stint in a rehabilitation unit to get dry. He spent four days in a coma.

Odom started his own private health care centers under his own name to help others to kick their habits. Sadly, it looks like he still can’t put down the bottle.

But this is a good sign. More health and wellness and rehabilitation centers should open across the land. As there is a church or liquor store on nearly every city street corner, there should be places for desperate people to attain the care and attention they need. What makes this an even better proposition is the fact there’s such a dearth of rehab centers and an alarming number of alcoholics and addicts.

Odom’s efforts should not be taken in vain just because he might end up in one of his own facilities. In fact, he should be the ultimate role model for those who fall down and then get up again.

His resolve to stay sober especially while driving has collapsed. No longer does he have a clean slate. It’s been marred by this latest arrest and carries with it the reality that he is still not well. But the privatization of drug and alcohol centers will be increased as more drug laws become repealed and substances become legal.

With more rehab locations, there will be an influx of folks who just want to put the pieces of their life back together. They yearn to taste the sweetness of freedom from addiction. There’s a throughline that shows Odom’s hazardous lifestyle. He’s achieved professional greatness while his personal life has been in shambles. Though an NBA contender, he has struggled with substances for quite some time now.

In his own way, Odom has stood in his own way. He’s brought all of this on himself through poor decision-making skills. All of this could’ve been prevented had he been able to stay away from the hard stuff.

His brief marriage to Khloe Kardashian has shown just how important it is to choose the right woman. Maybe she was the right one. She certainly stood by his side when he had taken ill in 2015. Whatever the case, he had the money, the woman, the life. He risked all of that for the contents of a liquor bottle.

He put himself in jeopardy so many times he had put a strain on the marriage and the couple divorced in 2016. This is no way to live. And for people to say, “he’s selfish” must not know that overdosing and driving drunk and being in trouble with the law are not hallmarks of a rationally self-interested individual.

There is a distinction that should be made marking people who step outside of rational behavior and egoistic understanding. When someone goes out of their way to be reckless and threaten the lives of others and especially themselves, it is not selfishness but irrationality that is to blame. With the ability to harm, even if they don’t plan on it, they lower themselves to the level of a brute.

Odom is a prime example of a mixed bag. He had been great, is great for the rehab centers, but must learn how to balance his choices with his own life.
