After John Jay wrestlers jumped out to a 24-0 lead, Rye scored 15 straight to get within range. Of course, the heart of the Wolf lineup was on deck, and there seemed little cause for concern. But Austin Omin, Jojo Kern and Jake Llanos all had their hands full, and the visitors proved nothing in this sport is a gimme.

The three alpha Wolves trailed in their respective matches, and while Kern succumbed in the third, Omin and Llanos registered come from behind victories in John Jay’s 48-21 win.

David Corrales got things going, and the Wolf did so by playing cat and mouse. He quickly shot for the takedown and proceeded to let Raphael Chared Sandstrom get back to his feet. Three more times the 101 pounder followed suit, and when he was done taking from the give, a 15-4 first period remained. Onto the second, the sophomore finally put his foot down, and 30 seconds later, the Garnet was put away.

Easy enough, Ben Zhu and Emerson Flamm barely laced their wrestling shoes. Both received forfeits, and John Jay led 18-0.

The formalities aside, John Aniello put in a decent day’s work next. A 3-1 deficit to start, the 124 pounder responded with a takedown and opened up a six point lead on back points. Ewan Jones did roll a reversal to close the first, but a minute into the second, Aniello introduced his opponent to the ceiling.

24 in a row, Rye now began their run. Ronan Sutter pinned Isaac Sullivan with 16 second left in the first, Danny Huyhua took a 10-6 decision over Dennis Zapson, and Tyler Walsh pinned Aiden McCaffrey with 33 seconds left in the second.

Enter Omin and the long first period dance done with Jason Gaylord did not indicate the Rye run would end. In fact, Gaylord won the strategic struggle and led 3-0.

Now on the mat, the two continued until Omin broke free. He earned one with an escape and footwork held sway again. But this time, Omin got the takedown, added back points and went into the second with a 7-4 lead.

Down for the third, Omin was up for a reverse, and with 32 seconds left in the period, he lowered the bar. Running it, the pin gave John Jay a 30-14 lead, and Kern was on deck.

Unfortunately, Cayden Wing was the wrestler who swung away. He scored ten straight points, and Kern only had one period to make up the difference. So the 160 pound Wolf responded to the need for expediency, and pulled a switch out of the box.

Two points on the reverse, Kern hooked a cradle and back points closed the match to 10-6. But Wing took the upper hand almost as fast and rebounded with a pin at 1:25.

Nine points separating the teams, Llanos now was on the hot seat and twice that’s where he found himself. Taken down twice in the first period, the 170 pounder stood tall.

He opened with a second period takedown, and after Cornelius Luth got to his feet, Llanos made the most of it. Another takedown and the Wolf closed the period with more back points. An 11-8 lead, Llanos chose neutral to start, and only took 25 seconds for the takedown and pin.

John Jay able to exhale, Jack Quinlin was a whirlwind. A takedown, back points, and in control, the 190 pounder ran a half to six more John Jay points.

All doubt removed at 42-21, the match ended in very unfortunate fashion. A 3-2 match, Craig Holm-Jorgensen was thrown hard to the mat, and the match stopped, the trainers attended. Moving and in pain, the wrestler remained on the mat, the gym was cleared and the afternoon ended.
