On Friday May 9. John Jay and Mahopac faced each other and the rain on a dreary day. Nonetheless, both teams moved the ball and made some very exciting plays in the first half at Mahopac High School. But neither team scored, and leaving the second half to settle matters, it was a series of big plays that made the difference.
All going to the home team, the WolfPac left John Jay soaking wet by scoring a 25-0 victory.
Of course, the game started with promise. Jaime Bartley-Cohen hit Maya Koronowski on screen to the right, and she eluded the defense with a 12 yard first down gain to the 30.
The back added two more determined runs and got the offense across midfield to the 39. Unfortunately, the drive stalled but the next three possessions followed suit to maintain the status quo.
14:56 left in the half, Mahopac was the first to yield the bends when Bartley-Cohen connected with Sadie Walworth on third down. A play action pass from the 26, the QB lofted and hit her receiver in stride at the Mahopac 31.
The flag pulled simultaneously, Walworth was soon ready for more. After Bartley-Cohen ran a pair of short quarterback draws to the 27, Walworth made a shoe top catch on fourth down and the drive was alive at the 19.
Four more yards was all the Wolves got, though and Mahopac was next not to break through. After driving all the way to the seven, Niamh Kelleher had her flag pulled at the four by Walworth on the reception, and the ball was turned over on downs with 2:48 left in the half.
John Jay made the most of the dwindling clock anyway. Not wasting any time, Gianna Pelosi reached up for Bartley-Cohens pass, and coming down with the oblong had the receiver getting Jay to the Mahopac 38.
Bartley-Cohen then kept her options open on the next two plays. On third down, with no one open, she ran nine yards to the 27, and kept the drive going when a collapsing pocket freed Walworth up for a first down at the 20.
A penalty added, the prime position resulted in the same stall. A short gain, an incomplete and an interception in the end zone by Courtney Koch sent the scoreless game into the half.
The downpour starting to let up, Mahopac refused to do the same. On second down from the John Jay 12, Maria Garofolo burst the keeper through the line and didn’t stop until Walworth pulled the flag at the ten.
Two plays later, Mady Ford followed the same blueprint. She took the handoff, exploded through the white jerseys, and Mahopac was in the end zone.
6-0 on the failed conversion, the teams traded quick possessions and that left the Mahopac defense to really come to the fore. On Bartley-Cohen’s roll right, Kelleher stepped in front of the under-thrown pass, and the pick set the WolfPac up only 18 yards away.
Still, the Wolves held and a fourth and twenty looked pretty good. Not quite, Garofolo air mailed the ball to the end zone, and Kelleher used all her height to pull down a 13-0 lead.
John Jay had no answer on offense, and the ball going back to Mahopac had Kelleher again putting the visitors to the test. On second down from the John Jay 38, Garofolo hit Kelleher on the sideline, and in receipt, she really did a number.
The receiver eluded the cornerback, cut back into the middle of the field and danced her way through four defenders. In for the touchdown, she added one more touchdown reception and John Jay could only admire in awe before heading back home in defeat.
