On Tuesday, January 14, John Jay welcomed Peekskill to the high school, and Jake Llanos declared what the wrestling team strives for no matter the opponent. “84-0 Is always the goal,” said the 170 pounder, and he wasn’t far off on this day.
"We almost got it,” he said after the 78-6 victory.
The Wolves had a lot of help, though. They were aided by seven Peekskill forfeits, and the action didn’t actually start until the visitors finally fielded a 145 pounder.
Tony Monchinski got a first period pin on Aidan McCaffrey, but that was the last piece of resistance the Red Devils would offer the Wolves.
At 150 Austin Omin continued the string. He got a single leg takedown to start and ran a bar to a pin with 38 seconds left in the first.
Next up, Jojo Kern hung around a bit longer. In the first, he scored a takedown and ran a cross face cradle to a 7-0 lead. Not letting up, the 160 pounder earned a reversal, scored more back points and put Stephen Cordero away at 1:04.
Now 48-6, Llanos was ready to do his part and started out in typical fashion. His opponent getting a decent shot on a double leg takedown, the Red Devil didn’t know what he was getting into. “They get a false sense of security,” said the Wolf.
In keeping, the actual strategy was revealed by Llanos. “I have long legs and have all the leverage,” he assured.
Working to perfection, Llanos was ready to do business from the top. The grappler employed a cradle for a 5-0 lead and moments later had the pin with a half nelson.
Six more points, Jeff Quinlin received the same with a forfeit, so the heavyweights returned some action to the afternoon. An unfamiliar place for James Dachik, he was wrestling up a weight class and went in with adjustments. “I was trying to work my under hooks,” he said.
A 0-0 stalemate ensued for most of the first period. “It wasn’t really working,” Dachik admitted.
So the 215 pounder returned to the drawing board. “I went to a throw,” said Dachik, and he hit the toss for the takedown.
Still, his opponent managed an escape and closed the lead to 3-2 on another escape to start the second. Upright again, Dachik went back to the well and both wrestlers had mixed results. “I messed it up, but he messed it up worse,” said Dachik.
The unraveling added up, though. “It wasn’t good, but I ended up on top and finished it,” he said.
Now, the day of forfeits was almost over, and Ryker Mccarthy was finally on the other end as the super heavyweight. "So many times when I’m going to wrestle, I get hyped up all day just to see nobody is there,” said the 285 pounder. “It happens too much.”
As such, the Wolf battled the neutral position to a 0-0 first period tie. Onto the second, Mccarthy got an escape and soon realized his opponent didn’t have as much pent up energy. “He didn’t have good stamina,” said Mccarthy.
No mercy, the wrestler did what he had to. “I shot a hard, high crotch and clamped him down,” he said.
The 4-0 lead a formality, Mccarthy brought it home. “I got the arm, ran it, circled around him and pulled him down,” he said, and the dominating day was concluded.
