On Thursday May 15, John Jay traveled south and took on a tough Horace Greeley team. Nonetheless, the Wolves scored first, and stayed close for most of the first half. But when Jacob Fragin won a 50-50 ball deep in the Greeley zone, he sparked his team the other way, and the play’s outcome officially had Quakers being over their peaceful start

The big stick took the play well past midfield, Matt Byrnes eventually set up from behind, and his wrap-around was the first of a nine goal run that led to a 12-3 loss for John Jay.

Obviously the end run was not the way the game started, and it was Blake O’Callahan who set the early tone. Jake Gashi juked his way into a little space and swung over his left shoulder with a clear line of sight.

Easy pickins for the John Jay goalie, he put his Wolves on the attack, and Brendan Corelli fired the first salvo. A save for Luke Kaplow, John Hartney gobbled up the rebound and easily beat the Quaker goalie.

In at 10:14, O’Callaghan continued to keep Greeley honest. Luke Dessi came free at point blank, and the Wolf’s body block send the rebound flying back to midfield.

Of course, Greeley brought a goalie too. William Harris won the ensuing scramble, and Corelli ended up with the shot. A swing left, his sidewinder was met by a Kaplow deflection, and an errant Jay pass took care of the incursion.

The goalie was there at the six minute mark too. A deflection on Dino Rajamani’s sidearm from the left, Kaplow did a double take seconds later. The ball this time to Greeley, the offense then took the cue.

Matt Byrne specifically, he did a back and forth behind the net, and losing Peter Hill in the process, the attacker scored on the wrap-around at 5:01.

All tied, Kaplow kept it there. At 3:40, Corelli came away with the ball on a midfield scramble, and landing all alone on the right of Kaplow, the goalie stood tall with the block.

Not to be outdone, O’Callahan spared his body when Gashi swung right. A big sidearm, the junior casually reached up with his catcher to secure the first period tie.

The goalie didn’t get a respite when switching ends either. On the penalty, Byrne deftly slipped a pass out front to Jameson Blakeslee, but O’Callahan was quick on the draw with the save.

Killing the penalty from there, Jay ran into a wall. Hartney was double teamed on the sideline, Ryder Goodman picked up the pieces and fired the ball down field to Byrne. Ahead of the field, he stood alone in the crease, and O’Callahan didn’t have a chance.

The lead for good at 10:16, the Quakers still had O’Callahan to engender doubt. The Wolf snared another sidearm at 7:55. But the goalie threw the ball away, and Greeley made him pay. Deja Vu, Byrne juked from behind and came out in front with his second wrap around at 6:48.

3-1 now, Greeley kept the pressure on, and following suit, O’Callahan refused to give in. He got low on Gashi’s underhand, Harris scored the pickup, and this time the goalie connected on the outlet. Up the field, Rajamani eventually got the ball on the left and beat Kaplow for a one goal game at 4:20.

Unfortunately, a minute later the game started to get away. Three more goals were in before the half ended, and the relentless Quaker pressure sent the boys home in defeat.

The game had some intense moments. The Wolves' early lead was short-lived. That nine-goal run really turned the tide.
