On Tuesday April 22, John Jay and Somers matched up to continue their long time crosstown rivalry. Very one sided in recent years, the Tuskers were typically not pushovers, and the game remained in doubt throughout. But John Jay still only knows one storyline when it comes to their friends down the road.

After Sydney Ingraham made it a 9-5 game with six minutes remaining, Coco Inglis officially put the game away three minutes later in John Jay’s 10-6 victory.

The game began with the goalies, though. Ingraham whipped a sidearm at Molly Gallagher at 8:30, and twenty seconds later, Amelia Inglis went overhand right in front of Emma Donaldson. Both times the catchers got their due, and the scoreboard remained unblemished.

Not for long, John Jay pressure in transition forced a turnover, and the offense responded. Inglis waiting at X for the right moment, Jojo Degl hit the spot. Receiving in front of Donaldson, the senior shot down and up went the 1-0 score.

In at 6:42, defense would turn into offense again for the Wolves. Converging on a Somers rush from behind Gallagher, the ball came loose, and Jane Brennan was off to the races. Passing off, Jay set up. Inglis then passed forward to Jordan Kauftheil, and she maneuvered through two elephants to reach the finish line at 5:00.

So Somers got themselves in the passing lanes too. Kate Barton received a perfect lead from the 20, and the synergy made for a one goal game.

At 3:56, Degl tried to not give Somers any funny ideas by taking the draw herself. But Donaldson had the last laugh when the middie cut across with a point blank shot. The Tusker reached up at 3:45, and her catcher pretty much closed the first quarter highlights.

Donaldson was there for the open too. With Inglis bearing down after the draw, Donaldson got a deflection, and Somers was up.

Unfortunately, a long pass put the Tusker goaltender back in the crossfire. Inglis on the trigger at the top of the circle, she hit Finja Degl cutting across, and the sophomore unleashed in traffic for a 3-1 lead at 9:32.

Nifty pass work that had Somers following suit. Dropping back from the 20, Barton hit a defended Mia Paulmeno at the ten, and she beat Gallagher to make it a one goal game again.

8:12 remaining in the half, the goalies continued to sparkle. Donaldson stopped Micayla DeVeau on the free shot at 5:50, and a minute later, Gallagher returned the favor on Caitlyn Mayfield.

The ball not going anywhere, Gallagher put her foot down. Barton right in front, the Wolf got a kick save and that set her team up for separation. Another free shot, Inglis connected, and Jay led 4-2.

Executing at 2:53, Jojo Degl refused to yield the draw, and on the scrum, she gave her team the ball on the whistle. The James Madison commit then drew the penalty and fired the ball past Donaldson at 1:58.

5-2, the game moved to the third, and the entrance of Kaityln Condon to the draw circle quickly paid dividends. No bother to Degl. she ran under her teammate’s loft, and stock options were on the way. Holding the note, Kauftheil swung in front and made it 6-2.

Still, Somers had an answer. Paulmeno got the whistle on Lyla Mancini’s pass from the goal line, and the senior cut the lead in half at 8:45.

So Condon and Degl continued to make the switch work. Degl ran under, and after her sister Finja put a shot on, the elder scored on the rebound.

Only 28 seconds elapsing, Somers refused to go away and began with Donaldson. On Finja Degl’s free shot, the goalie twirled her stick, and Somers had the loose ball.

5:37 left in the third, Somers kept coming. Mayfield drew the penalty and went low to beat Gallagher at 4:11.

A 7-4 game, Donaldson preserved the status quo. Twice stopping Finja Degl, a stick save on the free shot and a stand tall in the crease continued the Tusker’s inspired performance.

Not the only one, Donaldson gave way to Gallagher when Mayfield lined up for the penalty shot. Gallagher scooped the low ball and nonchalantly flipped the ball up to secure the end of the third.

That brought out the Condon/Degl show again. On a bounce this time, Degl had the scoop, and seconds later, she drew a penalty. 11 yards out and straight on, Degl peered in with tunnel vision and fired an overhead to regain a four goal lead at 11:25.

One more big save for Gallagher put Jay in position to close out the game. She short hopped Barton’s overhead, and a couple of kids moved in for the kill. DeVeau of John Jay middle school met the double team on the goal line, passed forward to Dillion Hall and the freshman juked the interior defense for position. A little space, she made good and the five goal lead at 8:05 turned another page in favor of the Wolves.
