He's Back! A Kyle Schwarber Story

The three-time All-Star has 150 million reasons to smile this offseason

The MLB offseason has been filled with drama, mainly surrounding the New York Mets letting three of their best players sign to other teams, resulting in their fans expressing their anger towards David Stearns. However, there is some good news that will make everyone smile, especially for Philadelphia Phillies fans. The ever-talented Kyle Schwarber will be sticking around in Philly for a few more years. The three-time All-Star signed a five-year, $150 million deal and the news was music to the ears of baseball fans. Many thought he would return to the Chicago Cubs, where he won his first World Series title and was one of the main factors in snapping the team's 108-year-old championship drought. I knew he wasn't going anywhere, because he's too important of a player to just walk away. In other news, manager Rob Thomson will also be with the Phillies for a while longer. After the deal with Schwarber was made official, Thomson signed an extension through the 2027 season.

I've stated in previous stories on here that the Phillies were not a championship team, at least, not yet. Despite Schwarber and Thomson staying put, I feel like more changes to the roster need to be made. You can't have the same players, manager, and coaches, expecting a different result. Since their last World Series appearance in 2022, they haven't had much Postseason success, except for in 2023 when they reached the NLCS and lost a crucial Game 7 (the first in franchise history) to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Since then, their Postseason appearances always resulted in them being one and done. They can win as many National League East division titles as possible, but anything less than a World Series title will only lead to more years of disappointment. The Phillies still need to work on being disciplined at the plate, aka not going for the long balls. We all know that Bryce Harper isn't going anywhere, because he has several more years left in his contract. It's been a quiet offseason, but the Phillies will have to make some tough decisions to improve their roster.

I still don't have any faith in the Phillies. At least, not at this time. They have to work on not focusing so much on trying to hit home runs every time. While home runs are nice to see and exciting, I'd love to see them hit RBI singles and doubles. Playing small ball is acceptable, too. There's no need for them to beat an opposing team by a bunch of runs. They say that defense wins championships and this adage still holds true in any sport. The Phillies won 96 games, winning the National League East crown. Winning a division title looks and sounds good on paper, but that and a regular season record and is irrelevant once you're in the Postseason. The ultimate goal is and will be winning a World Series title. The two players on the Phillies who have won World Series titles are Schwarber and Trea Turner, which he accomplished that during his time with the Washington Nationals. The Philadelphia Eagles, while they currently sit atop the NFC East, their overall performance has suffered lately. There's no way of telling if they'll be back in the Super Bowl again.

It wouldn't be surprising if Kyle Schwarber decides to end his career in Philadelphia, because he so loved by fans, the organization, and baseball fans everywhere. Honestly, he should've won the NL MVP Award over Shohei Ohtani but expect more Schwarbombs from the World Series champion in 2026. Who knows? He might actually win the aforementioned award next year.
