On Friday February 14, GreeleyJay laced their skates at the Brewster Ice Arena and tangled up versus Pawling. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for Tigers to unknot the opening, and the demise continued from there.
Pawling scored at 14:43, added the next three goals and went onto an easy 6-2 victory.
The game did have GreeleyJay on the power play in the opening seconds. But the time passed quickly, and Pawling didn’t waste any time once returning to even strength. Gavin Dumas came free with the puck on the left and scored only ten seconds after the advantage expired.
The teams then traded chances. After Jake Geiger’s shot was blocked before it got to the net, Jack Hartney dropped the puck for Dylan Geary but the Wolf couldn’t get enough stick on the puck at 12:20.
A clear shot from the right by Sam Wecksell kept the Greeley momentum going. But William Hollywood covered the rebound, and the tide turned. First Connor Starace shot just high, and the puck staying in, Julian Cubic took a whack.
Johnny Marlatt there with the glove save, the ensuing faceoff cued up Pawling for a two goal lead. From the left of the goal, Dumas centered to Tanner Waldorf, and the puck was in at 7:17.
In command, Pawling continued to control and put Marlatt to the test. Still, the period ended with GreeleyJay almost cutting the lead in half. Brody Stogsdill and Jack Hartney broke in with a two on one, but the Pawling defense was able to catch up and usher on the Zamboni.
Onto the second, there was no power play to slow the start for Pawling. The puck came to Dumas on the left, and he made it 3-0 at 16:38.
Staying in the zone, the shots kept coming, and at 15:20, Gunner Lavoie unleashed from the left. A 4-0 lead piled on, and Pawling didn’t let up. Tyler Gendron went cross ice to Jayden Loibl, and Starace made a nifty behind the back advance at the blue line for a shot on goal.
Still, GreeleyJay bounced back. Brendan Asta’s breakaway chance sailed wide right, Wecksell nearly tipped in Riley McMahon’s shot at 11:30, and then Stogsdill tried the five hole on a streak down the right side with 10:20 left in the third.
Fortunately, probability would prevail with the pressure. Stogsdill and Hartney got the puck to the crease, and Geary was able to get enough wood on the puck to have it trickle over.
A 4-1 score at 7:01, GreeleyJay was unable to get any closer before the teams cleared the ice at intermission. Undeterred by the break, GreeleyJay kept play in the Pawling zone. Stogsdill nearly sliced through two defenders and Asta’s maneuver in the corner let the Wolf put the puck right out front.
In wait of a GreeleyJay stick at 12:50, Pawling got their first. But a nifty centering pass to McMahon kept GreeleyJay in business and in the zone. A power play would result at 10:23, and while the chances were a plenty, the puck did not find a home.
Not a good omen, the Tigers brought the devil, and their power play only lasted 13 seconds. Lavoie teed off and extended the lead to 5-1 with 7:24 remaining.
Seemingly sunk, GreeleyJay missed the message. They won the face-off, Stogsdill would find Hartney out front, and his shot made it a three goal game again.
6:52 left, GreeleyJay pressed on, but Pawling officially ended the evening at 3:47. Max Koehler came straight in and juked the puck past Marlatt for the 6-2 final.
