It is conference championships season in collegiate track and field. The Winners Only brand will be covering the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) for the first time, May 14-15 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Throughout our history we've brought the public previews and reviews from the NCAA Indoor Championships, East Regional, ACC, Big Ten, MEAC, Mid-American Conference, SWAC championship meets. The Coastal Athletic Association may not be a conference that is loaded with traditional track and field powerhouses that have major brand recognition, but there are gems that have built strong reputations over the years and are looking to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships at the end of the season.

The CAA 400 meters is an event that we're excited to cover and watch. Last year's conference runner-up, Cristal Cuervo of Towson is looking to collect her first outdoor championship in the event. She was the 2024 indoor CAA 400-meter winner. The Panama City, Panama native and senior enters this year's preliminary round with the second fastest time of the season at 53.76 seconds.

Only Yasmeen Tinsley has a faster time of 53.49 seconds. The record-breaking performing Monmouth senior will also compete in the 100 meters, 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. While this is her first time competing as an open sprinter at the CAA outdoor meet, Tinsley is the current conference runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. A native of Arlington, Virginia, Tinsley is the Monmouth record holder in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles.

Both Tinsley and Cuervo were regional qualifiers in 2024. Tinsley participated in the 400-meter hurdles, while Cuervo sprinted in the 400 meters.

Along with running in the 400 meters, Cuervo will also be in the CAA opening round of the 200 meters. The top 200 performer so far this season is Northeastern sophomore Savannah Blair who clocked in at 23.09. Blair also has the top 100 meters time of 11.35. She has competed in two CAA Indoor Championships, but this is her first outdoor conference championships appearance.

The meet is hosted by North Carolina A&T who spent its time as a member of the MEAC from 1970 to 2021. Winners Only covered the MEAC Outdoor Championships in 2019 and 2021 which was also hosted by North Carolina A&T. During that time the Aggies became one of the elite programs in the country with NCAA champions Cambrea Sturgis, Kayla White and First-Team All-Americans Paula Salmon taking North Carolina A&T to heights that it hadn't before seen.

One of the athletes working to extend the great North Carolina A&T tradition is Spirit Morgan. In her first year with the program after two in Cincinnati, Morgan has thus far dominated. She won the CAA Indoor high jump championship in February. Morgan enters the outdoor conference meet as the season's leader at 1.83 meters.

The top competition for Morgan is the 2024 outdoor champion, Veronica Chaynov, who was also last year's indoor champ. Chaynov's top jump of the season is 1.80 meters. Like Morgan, her career best mark is 1.83 meters, but she cleared that mark a little over a year ago. Both Chaynov and Morgan have competed in the high jump at the east regional meet in 2024. Morgan was one miss away from advancing to the NCAA championship meet. Morgan made her east regional debut in 2023, while Chaynov missed the 2023 meet after debuting at the east regional in 2022 as a freshman.

There is a lot of rain and lightning in the forecast on the opening day of competition. Temperatures are expected to reach as high as 74 degrees with gentle winds of nine miles per hour.
