CFL Week 4 Recap: A Tale That's Old as Time
The defending champions win for the first time in 2025, and the Roughriders continue to prove their strength in the West

It seems like yesterday that the 2025 CFL season started, and I was waiting so patiently for it. Now we are about a month into the season; Week Four arrived just days away from Canada Day, though it received the Canada Day prestige. It was an all-divisional schedule; two West games, two East games, making for some interesting football for sure.
The week started in Winnipeg with the Blue Bombers hosting the Edmonton Elks, and while it did start close--the Elks actually led 7-6 after the first period--it would be the Bombers the rest of the way, because of course it would. Winnipeg went on to win it, 36-23, adding more woes to Edmonton's already woeful start. On the following day, the Montréal Alouettes faced the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and that game actually saw the game tied at one after the first quarter. Gotta love Canadian football--anything can happen. That anything happened to include the TiCats actually going on to dominate the game. Before you could say "Sacre bleu!," the Als found themselves blasted by the TiCats, 35-17. Wow!
It was the West's turn on Saturday, as the unbeaten Saskatchewan Roughriders hosted the BC Lions in a Saturday matchup. This was pretty much over when it started. It's usually interesting when the Lions and Riders get together; I've seen a lot of OT battles between the two teams over the years, but this one was a laugher. It was 16-7 Riders at halftime, but they didn't look back. A 38-17 win for the home team, keeping them unbeaten in 2025. The week ended with the first Sunday game of the season, and it was the East's turn: Redblacks hosting the Argos. I had a good feeling we'd win this, and we did, a 29-16 victory for the Boatmen. How did I know we'd win? Simple. It's Toronto vs Ottawa. Toronto beating Ottawa has been a thing for decades, and finally, the defending champs have a win this season.
So after four weeks, here's how things stand:

Holy moley, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are 4-0! Both they and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are unbeaten, but it's the Riders who are on top of the league with four wins in as many weeks. The Calgary Stampeders are 2-1 and in third place, but the BC Lions are off to a troubling start at 1-3. Granted, it's still early, but 1-3 is still a tough start to come back from. They made the playoffs last year at 9-9, so they'll have to win eight of their remaining 14 games to match that, but with how good the West looks this year, 9-9 won't be enough. In the East, the Montréal Alouettes' first loss of the season helped the Argos and Tiger-Cats out. The Als still have a strong lead, and the Tiger-Cats are second thanks to the win. Both the Argos and Redblacks are 1-3, but Sunday's win moved us into third place via tiebreaker. That's all it took; our first win of the season put us in a playoff position. Amazing!
Week 5 kicks off on Thursday, July 3 with a Western battle between the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. On Friday, July 4, the Toronto Argonauts host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a very pivotal Eastern battle. On Saturday, July 5, the Montréal Alouettes host the BC Lions, and the week ends on Sunday, July 6 with the Ottawa Redblacks and the Edmonton Elks facing each other.
