CFL Week 2 Recap: Party Poopers

The Toronto Argonauts' 19th championship banner is raised, but the game does not go the Champs' way

Beautiful, isn't it?

I had Saturday, June 14 circled on my mental calendar for one main reason: it was the Toronto Argonauts' home opener, meaning that our championship banner would be raised. The 111th Grey Cup last November was absolutely amazing! It was the Argos against the Blue Bombers again, but unlike the 109th Grey Cup, which the Argos narrowly won in a back and forth battle, last year was a beat down. The Bombers had no answer for the Argos on that evening, and as a result, the Argos were Grey Cup Champions for the league leading 19th time.

This year is our pursuit for #20, but opening week did not go well against the Alouettes. Week 2 was our home opener. The banner was raised, and we were set to host the Calgary Stampeders. The Argos did score first, but it was a rouge. Even so, it was our first lead of the season. It would not last. We also wouldn't get another one. It was all Stampeders after that, and just like the first game, we wouldn't get in the end zone until late in the game. A 29-19 victory for the Stampeders, and as a result, the Argos are 0-2. Not the end of the world, though, it's still early.

Speaking of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, they kicked off their 2025 campaign at home against the BC Lions, and while it was close, the Bombers dominated at the right time and went on to win this thing, 34-20, over the Lions. The Bombers know the goal. They started the season at home. They plan to end it at home... in November. So far, this win is a good start to Winnipeg's goal, though it can be said that somebody in the West needs to knock Peg down a few pegs.

Elsewhere, the Montréal Alouettes went to the Canadian capital, and it was another dominant game for the 2023 Champs. 39-18 over the Ottawa Redblacks, that's two division wins already inthe book for the Als. Following Toronto's home opener that Saturday, Week 2 ended in the same province of Ontario, this time in Hamilton, as the Tiger-Cats hosted the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The TiCats scored first, and the game was back and forth, leaving me hoping for overtime. That extra period would not be needed, as the Riders did hold things down and pull out a 28-23 victory in Hamilton.

After two weeks, here's how things stand:

Right now, the Alouettes really look like the strong team here, but that could change, it's only been two weeks. It's crazy. The lone Quebecois team is 2-0, but the Ontarian teams are all winless. In the West, the Stampeders and Riders are both 2-0 and standing strong. The Blue Bombers started their 2025 season with a win, the BC Lions dropped to 1-1, and the Edmonton Elks are still 0-1 due to not playing in Week 2. There's 19 weeks left in this season. A lot can happen between now and the end of Week 21. Scripts can definitely be flipped.

Week 3 will begin on Thursday, June 19 with the Edmonton Elks hosting the Montréal Alouettes, and hopefully for Edmonton, that game will be the first of back-to-back big sporting events on back-to-back days (Friday is the day of a potential Game Seven). Speaking of Friday, June 20, the Toronto Argonauts will host the unbeaten Saskatchewan Roughriders. On Saturday, June 21, it's another doubleheader; first, the Calgary Stampeders will host the Ottawa Redblacks, and it's followed by another meeting between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the BC Lions, this time in Vancouver.

The Argos' season didn't start great, but it's early. The Bombers' win is a good start.
