CFL Week 16 Recap: Enough is Enough

The Toronto Argonauts' home loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats places the team's playoff aspirations in slight jeopardy

By Clyde E. DawkinsPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Swept by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. What fresh hell is this?!

I was amped for this game because, well, we picked up a much needed win in Vancouver on the previous week, so I figured we'd go on a roll. A proper playoff push that could see good things for the Boatmen. We were at home against the Tiger-Cats. OK. It's our turf. We can salvage a win, pick up a game in the playoff chase, and continue our roll.

Nope. Lost 33-31 at home.

Chad Kelly's got to go. Why wasn't he suspended for a full season for his bullshit? Why didn't we get rid of him during the offseason? His game has badly regressed. The idiot was too busy stalking women to actually, you know, focus on fucking football! This is absolutely not good. I'm not disrespecting the Tiger-Cats; yeah, they are a mess and have been for years, but the potential's there. Even so, Toronto's owned them for the most part. Not this year. Three meetings, three losses for the Boatmen. Now it's near panic time in Toronto. Shit needs to be fixed...now!.

A miracle happened during Week 16: the Saskatchewan Roughriders won a game! The Riders won, 37-29, over the Calgary Stampeders, ending a near two month long winless drought that would have killed their season if the West wasn't so suddenly mediocre this year. The Riders needed this win, big time; this team was 5-1, yet suddenly sinking. The other West Division game was between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Edmonton Elks, and I was hoping to see Edmonton steal a win and continue to shock the world, but it was not to be. The Bombers won, 27-14, and are back in the form that we've been familiar with since 2019.

The only game that had the most playoff implications was the battle between the Montréal Alouettes and the Ottawa Redblacks. The latter was looking to clinch a playoff spot, while the Alouettes were winless in their last two games. Despite the home field, the Redblacks could not match the Als' resolve, resulting in a 24-12 win for the defending champions. With the win, following the Argos' loss, the Alouettes clinched at least second place in the East, guaranteeing them a home playoff game.

With five weeks left in the season, here's how things stand:

The West may be mediocre, but it's close. We have the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on top at 8-6, having won eight of their last 10 games after starting 0-4. The BC Lions are right behind the Bombers at 7-7, while the Saskatchewan Roughriders' much needed win puts them right behind the Lions at 6-7-1. The Edmonton Elks still have an outside shot, but the Calgary Stampeders really need to get out of the West Division cellar.

In the East, the Montréal Alouettes are in prime position to lock themselves in at first place in the East Division. The Ottawa Redblacks still have a decent advantage for second place, and the Toronto Argonauts are barely hanging on to third. We are only two games ahead of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and they have the tiebreaker over us. It's disturbing: Hamilton has five wins--yet three of them were against the Boatmen. Yikes.

Week 17 will kick off on Friday, September 27 with a doubleheader; first, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will host the Edmonton Elks, and then, the BC Lions will host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. On Saturday, September 28, the Saskatchewan Roughriders will host the Ottawa Redblacks, followed by a big Eastern battle between the Montréal Alouettes and the Toronto Argonauts.
