CFL Week 14 Recap: Getting Down to Business
Week 14 set the stage for the final one-third of the 2025 season

The week after Labour Day Weekend in the CFL is always interesting. For one, that week sees some of the rivalry matches from that previous week take place again, this time with the home field switching. Secondly, and more importantly, it marks the conclusion of the heart of the schedule, the middle seven weeks of the season, meaning that there's just seven weeks remaining after that aftermath week.
For me, this was a bit of a nervous week in the CFL for one reason: the Toronto Argonauts were not playing. Following our win in Hamilton on Labour Day, the Argos had the following week off, so I found myself hoping for results that would increase the Argos' chances of playoffs. I did get some help from the Ottawa Redblacks, as they won a hard fought battle over the BC Lions, 34-33. So that was a benefit for the idle Boatmen.
Lions/Redblacks was the lone Friday matchup that week, the rest took place on a Saturday. First off in that tripleheader was the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Montréal Alouettes facing off in a huge Eastern matchup, and on that day, the Als were no match for the TiCats. Hamilton won 26-9 over Montréal, and after that, it was the Labour Day rematches. First off, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers looked to strike back against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but the Riders hung on, winning 21-13 to continue to maintain their hold on the West Division. After that, the Battle of Alberta switched to Edmonton, and in this rematch, the Elks defeated the Calgary Stampeders, 31-19, picking up their first divisional win of the season.
So entering the final home stretch of the season, here's how things stand:

After 14 weeks, the standings are very symmetrical; all nine teams have played a full dozen games, leaving six games left for each team. Out West, the Saskatchewan Roughriders moved one step closer to taking control of the division, while the Calgary Stampeders maintained a decent hold on second place. Third place is where things get interesting. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are barely hanging on to that important position, as they have not only the BC Lions creeping up on them, but the Edmonton Elks as well. The Elks have won four of their last five games, and now enter the final one-third of the season with a good chance to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2019.
In the East, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats take a commanding two game lead in the division, and they have the added bonus of having won the season series over the second-place Alouettes. The Toronto Argonauts and the Ottawa Redblacks have identical 4-8 records, but it's the Boatmen who have the tiebreaker. However, we are still behind the playoff line due to the Lions and Elks being 5-7, with the Lions holding the crossover spot. It's going to be an absolutely thrilling home stretch, and it's starting very soon.
Week 15 will begin with a pair of games on Friday, September 12; first off, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and that's followed by the Ottawa Redblacks and the BC Lions going at it again. On Saturday, September 13, the Toronto Argonauts will be back in action at home against the Edmonton Elks, and after that, the Saskatchewan Roughriders will host the Montréal Alouettes. The home stretch is on, folks! Get your seatbelts fastened!
